Background[edit]

On February 27, 1999, Riza Kika, chief of the security service at the limestone factory in Kačanik, was abducted by members of the KLA and taken to Gajre.[1]

Ambush[edit]

On February 28, 1999, Bogoljub Staletović and his MUP unit were sent to rescue Riza Kika. While en route, they were ambushed by a KLA unit using mortars, machine guns, and rocket launchers.[2][3] Staletović was killed instantly, and four of his men were severely wounded.[4][5]

Aftermath[edit]

After the initial ambush, the Associated Press, which was on the scene, reported that angry Serb police claimed the MUP unit was ambushed while responding to a "bogus" anonymous telephone call about some Serbs being kidnapped in the area.[6]
