The Garuda Palace (Indonesian: Istana Garuda) is the official residence and office of the President of Indonesia, situated atop a hill facing southwest to Plaza Seremoni Park and Bukit Bendera (Hill of Flag) in Nusantara, the new capital city of Indonesia.[1] The 2.400 m² palace was built by the Joko Widodo administration and placed in one complex with the State Palace (Istana Negara, situated beneath the Istana Garuda), the Presidential Secretariat office, and 4 Coordinating Ministries.[2]
The architectural design is based from the Garuda design created by I Nyoman Nuarta, a renowned sculptor. The design was approved by Joko Widodo in 2022. The palace is part of the 55,7-hectare Nusantara Presidential complex.[3]
As a landmark and point of interest of Nusantara, the palace is enclosed with a Garuda sheath. The Garuda sheath is 77 m in height and 177 m in wingspan. The sheath consisted of 4650 copper bars, each weighing 300 kg, arranged in the shape of a flying Garuda. The palace is considered an architectural and construction marvel exhibiting Indonesian capability in art, science, and technology.[2][4] Garuda Palace is the second presidential palace to be built after the Proclamation of Independence in 1945, after the Tampaksiring Palace in Bali.
