Ghulam Rasool Saeedi (14 September 1937–5 February 2016, Urdu: غلام رسول سعیدی) was a Pakistani Sunni Islamic scholar, author and writer belonging to the Barelvi movement of Sunni Islam.[1] He known for his book Tafsir Tibyan-ul-Qur'an.[2][3][4][5][6]

Early life and background[edit]

He was born in 1900 in the town of Saeedabad, which is located in the Azad Kashmir region of present-day Pakistan.[7][8]

He hailed from a family that valued education and spirituality. His parents encouraged him to pursue religious studies from an early age. He began his formal education at local madrasas (Islamic schools) in Azad Kashmir.[9] His thirst for knowledge led him to travel to various cities in the Indian subcontinent to study under scholars.[10] He studied Arabic, Persian, and Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) extensively. Saeedi also delved into the study of Hadith and Tafseer (Quranic exegesis).[11][12][13][14]

Teachers[edit]

  • Mawlana Abdul Ghafur Qadri.
  • Ustaz al Ulama Allama Mufti Muhammad Husayn Nayimi Ashrafi, Founder of Jamia Naeemia, Lahore[15]
  • Khalifa of Shabiha Ghawth al Azam Sayyid Ali Husayn Ashrafi Jilani Kichochavi.[16]
  • Mufti Aziz Ahmad Qadri Badayuni.[17]

Life[edit]

He commenced his teaching profession in 1966 at jamia naeemia lahore. In 1970, his colleagues at his alma mater entrusted him with the responsibility of teaching Sahih al Bukhari. In 1978, he was invited by Sunni Jurist Mufti Sayyid Shujaat Ali Qadri to teach at Jamia Naeemia Karachi.[18][19][20]

Saeedi's mentor at Jamia Neemia, Muhammad Husayn Ashrafi Naeemi, deeply missed his exceptional student and his remarkable lectures. Consequently, at the request of his mentor, Allama Saeedi returned and resumed his position as Shaykh al Hadith at Jamia Naeemia lahore.[21] In 1983, he began to suffer from diabetes, along with severe back pain that prevented him from teaching while sitting on the floor to teach in the traditional way. He temporarily left his teaching post but returned in 1985 at the invitation of Mufti Sayyid Shujaat Ali Qadri. From 1985 until 2016, he served as the Shaykh al Hadith of Jamia Naeemia Karachi.[22][23]

Selected works[edit]

Saeedi authored several significant books, particularly in the fields of Hadith, Fiqh, and Quranic exegesis. These include:[24]

  • Sharah Sahih Muslim (Urdu): A comprehensive commentary on Sahih Muslim, one of the six major Hadith collections. Available in 7 volumes in Urdu.[25]
  • Tibyanul Quran: An esteemed interpretation (Tafsir) of the Holy Quran in Urdu. Provides insights into the meanings and context of Quranic verses.[26]
  • Tazkiratul Muhaddiseen: A biographical work that profiles Hadith scholars. Offers valuable information about the lives and contributions of Hadith experts.[27][28]
  • Maqalat-i-Saeedi: A collection of scholarly essays and discourses. Covers various topics related to Islamic jurisprudence, theology, and spirituality.[29][30]
  • Tauzeehul Bayan: A concise commentary on the Quranic text. Focuses on explaining the verses in a straightforward manner.[31]
  • Maqam-i-Wilayat-o-Nabuwat: Explores the concept of sainthood (wilayat) and prophethood (nabuwat) in Islam.[32]
