Greater Manchester bus route 59 is a Bee Network bus route operating between Piccadilly Gardens and Oldham Mumps Interchange. It is operated by Stagecoach Manchester on contract from Transport for Greater Manchester.

History

[edit]

Route 59 was originally operated by GM Buses and operated on almost the same route as today. It used to have a sister route 58, operating between Rochdale Interchange and Middleton bus stop until 2020.

When the 59 began operation by GM buses in the 1980s, it used to operate into Shaw and Rushcroft from Piccadilly Gardens [1]. In the 2000s, the route was handed over to First Manchester.

In September 2017, the route was shortened to Oldham Mumps. Routes 181 and 182 will serve Shaw and Rushcroft[2].

In March 2020, the 59 along with its sister 58 was temporarily withdrawn during the UK-wide lockdown, but route 58 was not re-instated with route 182 running between Rochdale and Shaw and new route 57 running between Shaw and Oldham,[3] resulting this route losing its sister route.

In 2024,The route was again handed over to Stagecoach Manchester upon commencement of Tranche 2 of Bee Network bus franchising.
