Something going wrong?[edit]

There's a problem being discussed at WP:VPT#Bugs in categorization (still) which sounds like it might be something to do with the job queue - if there's anyone who knows about these things, could they take a look?--Kotniski (talk) 11:56, 14 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering, how do I see the Job queue?123Mike456Winston789 (talk) 19:51, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stuck queue[edit]

Resolved
 – Redrose64 (talk) 14:03, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(follow-up to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 71#Question)

The job queue seems to be moving extremely slowly, if at all. Where should I report it? Specifically, on 28 February 2010, this edit was carried out to Template:Skiing and Snowboarding-stub which should have moved all pages transcluding that template from Category:Skiing stubs to Category:Skiing and snowboarding stubs. However, if you view the former, there are still 36 pages listed. Visit any of these 36, and the category is at the bottom is shown as Category:Skiing and snowboarding stubs. On 2 March, there were about 45; 9 in 5 days isn't very good. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:57, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Today, 21. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:24, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Today, 17. This is ridiculous. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:39, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Job queue expedite[edit]

Is there any way to expedite stuff in the job queue? For example, a widely used but semiprotected template like Template:Sisterlinks was vandalized to prominently display some expletives. The change was unnoticed as it didn't get published until it went through the job queue. After it is published, someone sees it and fixes it. The problem is that this fix will not go live for some time, and in the meanwhile, users of Wikipedia will see that some pages heve a section full of said expletives. Basically, I'm asking if items in the job queue can be modified, deleted, or expedited, and where one can request such a change. ManishEarthTalkStalk 12:52, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Queue stuck again[edit]

Looks like the queue is stuck again. Make moving Washington broke it, but in any case this needs to be fixed. Vegaswikian (talk) 21:47, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This has been fixed now: thanks to [1] and [2] the job queue is approaching zero everywhere. :-D (About 190,000 here according to Special:Statistics, while two weeks ago it was about a million.) --Nemo 16:37, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's at 7 now. :-D --Nemo 15:34, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Where's it gone?[edit]

According to the hatnote, the current length of the job queue is at Special:Statistics... except that it isn't. The job queue is presently either slow or stuck: I know this because I amended Template:LNER Locomotives at 20:33 yesterday so that one of the links within it pointed directly to GCR Classes 8D and 8E instead of to the redirect GCR Class 8D, yet seventeen hours on, Special:WhatLinksHere/GCR Classes 8D and 8E still shows many more links coming in via the redirect than not. How can I tell where this is at in the job queue? --Redrose64 (talk) 13:08, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I remember looking for the job queue about 3 weeks ago and was wondering the same thing. Where has it gone? Jared Preston (talk) 17:33, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Morn (talk · contribs) has just provided a different link. This displays some XML, containing the attribute jobs="233761". Lets see if that figure moves in the next few days. If it just increases, we'll need an expert to kick the queue. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:53, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
On reload, the API value cycles between several different values between 231k and 243k, representing different servers apparently. But each of those values is slowly increasing as far as I can tell. --Morn (talk) 18:03, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that the job handlers had been down for a couple of days. http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/Server_admin_log "2:36 apergos: job queue reported slower than molasses, checked the job runners and there was one host running something. I did not restart the job runners though because the package has not been updated for 1.17 and was using the pre-1.17 deployment codebase. woops." Follow bugzilla:27727 for the progress. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:30, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Tim made a number of fixes to job code in 1.17 over the past couple of days. As you've already noticed, it seems to have done the trick. -- RobLa-WMF (talk) 20:21, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No -- you have to reload the API page a few times to randomly get all the numbers from all available servers. Right now the values are between 352k and 392k and slowly increasing, just as before. WikiProject Stub sorting[edit]

Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting#Any news on auto-recategorization? describes a problem which is directly related: pages categorised by template are not being recategorised when the template is amended. I've posted a question at meta:Meta:Babel#Where do I post a question? which is probably the wrong place entirely. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:53, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is some explanatory text at Wikipedia:FAQ/Categories#Why might a category list not be up to date?. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:34, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. Now if bugzilla:27727 could just be resolved, things might start to hop (or crawl faster). Does anybody have a clue what kind of turn around time happens at bugzilla? Maile66 (talk) 18:00, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions in the search bar[edit]

I'm still waiting for my templates to expand from February 19. But now a new issue has arisen, probably a part of this same problem. When you start typing into the search bar, it suggests selections as you type. It still does that for me, but there's a server issue (I think) not refreshing data for that to happen on newer pages. Just as of what I added March 1, which is a new page for Plemons, Texas. If I type in Plemons, it does not bring this up as a suggestion. If I type in Plemons Texas without the comma and do an Enter, it brings up a lot of stuff, but not Plemons, Texas. Typing Plemons, Texas with the comma will bring up the page. The system does not yet know to include Plemons, Texas in the Search bar suggestions. Maile66 (talk) 01:55, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I too have noticed that, and yes, I believe that it's also due to the borked job queue. I created a stack of redirects in late February 2011, around about the time that I amended the template mentioned earlier; for some days these were not coming up in the Search-box "predictive text", but most of them now do appear: the last one I created was Botriphnie railway station (21:01, 26 February 2011), which does come up as you type in to "Search"; however, GCR Class 8E (created 20:39, 24 February 2011) does not. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:57, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was under the impression that search did not use the job queue, but instead the lucene stuff looked at the OAIRepository interface periodically (so there is some delay), but I could be totally wrong on that. Bawolff (talk) 02:00, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Still looks like no one is capable of fixing the problem. Don't know the current queue size, but it is over two weeks long. I know someone complained about editing of templates being the cause, I don't recall where the discussion was, but the queue processing is still a problem. I know this has been asked before, but does anyone care? WP:AGF exists, but after years of having the problem and the only official response is that editing templates is the problem, one has to wonder who is behind this excuse? Do they share an office with the VE team? Can someone in power actually listen to the complaints and find AND FIX the bug in the job queue code once and for all? Editors and admins are not the problem. The code and the developers are! Vegaswikian (talk) 20:25, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
