Iltija Mehbooba Mufti (Kashmiri: اِلتیجا مَحبوبہ مُفتی)(Urdu: التجا محبوبہ مفتی) is an Indian politician from Jammu and Kashmir[2] and the daughter of Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. She is the grand-daughter of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP).[3][4] Iltija has recently emerged as a prominent political figure in the region, known for her assertive stance and candid remarks on the political landscape.[5][6]

Political career

[edit]

Iltija Mufti’s political career is still in its early stages, but she has emerged as a prominent voice in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. Iltija Mufti’s political career took off when she was appointed media advisor to her mother, Mehbooba Mufti. Her early role allowed her to observe the intricacies of political communication and strategy, a foundation that helped shape her own political identity.[7]

Iltija stepped into the spotlight when her mother, Mehbooba Mufti, was detained in 2019 following the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution of India. During this time, Iltija managed her mother’s social media and spoke publicly about the situation in Kashmir, challenging the central government’s actions and highlighting human rights issues in the region.[8]

She has since been vocal about the political and social disenfranchisement of Kashmiris, especially in international media. Iltija is seen by some as a potential future political leader, following in her mother’s footsteps, but she has not yet officially announced her entry into electoral politics or taken any formal roles within the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, her critical stance on government policies and her articulate engagement with the media have positioned her as an emerging political figure.[9]

Political views and advocacy

[edit]

Iltija Mufti has been a strong advocate for civil liberties and political rights in Jammu and Kashmir. She has consistently raised her voice against what she perceives as injustices in the region.[10] Her recent comments on had the potential role of the PDP as a ‘kingmaker’ in the upcoming assembly polls have sparked discussions on the evolving dynamics of Jammu and Kashmir’s politics.[11][12][13]but the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election proved otherwise her party Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party just won 3 seats[14] and she lost her Bijbehara seat to the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference candidate Bashir Ahmad Shah Veeri by almost 10 thousand votes a decisive victory[2] so her position as "kingmaker" remains in doubt.
