Jayden Yen Dumont (born February 24, 2006),[1] known professionally as Jaydes (previously known as Evvls[2]), is an American rapper, singer, producer, and songwriter from Tamarac, Florida. He gained popularity in the underground hip-hop scene in 2022 from social media and streaming platforms such as TikTok, and SoundCloud.[3] His most popular song is Rose,[4] with over 20 million streams across all streaming platforms.[4][5] He has collaborated with other underground artists,[6] including KA$HDAMI, Riovaz, Rich Amiri, Yung Fazo, and acquainted-artists wifiskeleton and Yuke.[6][7][8]
Career
[edit]2019–2021: Beginnings, "Evvls" & !?
[edit]In an interview with Masked Gorilla, Dumont stated that he began recording music in 2019, claiming he recorded this music in Audacity,[9] which he has since-then recorded, mixed, and produced his music in FL Studio.[9][10] In 2020, Jaydes began releasing music to SoundCloud under the name of "evvls",[9] which is currently used as an alias for the posting of archived and unreleased tracks.[2] He is best known for his soft vocals, and the support of the popularization of the PluggnB genre in 2021[11] with his singles such as vivienne, trust issues & clueless.[11][12][13][14]
On December 31, 2021, Jaydes released his debut studio EP, featuring fellow underground rapper Yung Fazo. !?.[15] The project received general acclaim from the majority of listeners, with the exception of complaints about the EP's short runtime.[15][16]
2022: Breakthrough, Romanticism & Heartpacing
[edit]On April 30, 2022, Jaydes released his 4-track studio EP, Romanticism,[17] which became a well-known project in his career.[18] This project was met with positive criticism, with users online praising the project for the angel-like vocals, acoustic guitar playing, and fusion of his PluggnB sound.[19][20] Although, due to the EP's extremely short length, listeners criticized the project over this, similar to his previous EP, !?.[21][16]
On August 14, 2022, Jaydes released another studio EP, Heartpacing,[22] which was also quickly considered a well-known project in his career.[23] This 9-track EP features fellow artists within the underground, Riovaz & Rich Amiri. This project features more of the PluggnB rap sound that he is best known for.
Overall, these two projects sparked success in the popularity of Jaydes in the underground, and some consider these to mark the beginning of the transition of his production change.[20]
On December 10, 2022, Jaydes released a studio single, poison,[24] which is currently his most popular single release, amassing over 10 million streams across all streaming platforms.[25] This song contains a slow bossa nova-style instrumental with his signature soft singing vocals over it.[24][26]
2023–present: "Mandy", Ghetto Cupid, Count Up Dracula & Panic
[edit]In 2023, Jaydes started making music under the moniker "Mandy",[27] and joined the group gothangelz.[28] The music was more focused on the Indie Rock and Punk sound he had been experimenting with, with a lot of the songs using instrumentals by Alex G and American Football.[29]
On August 16, 2023, Jaydes released his debut studio album, Ghetto Cupid[30] (under his main name, Jaydes), which was met with mixed reviews.[31] A critic from Pitchfork recalled "the project pulls together disparate strands, from plugg to shoegaze and emo balladry", "It’s messy, but it works more often than not."[32][31] Other users online negatively criticized the album because of its shifty genre coverage, and others disliked it because of the low-quality production.[31] The most critically acclaimed and most popular song on the album, Rose, the album's intro. This song is also Jaydes' most popular song to-date, with over 20 million streams.[4][29][33]
In December 2023, his single belikeme? (released under Evvls) was listed by The New York Times as one of the best songs of 2023.[34]
Jaydes started releasing music consistently under his main profile again in 2024, bringing his experimental sound from Mandy with him.[27][32] His production drastically changed more punk-focused. This sound would carry into his future projects. He claimed that he was going to keep making punk music, instead of PluggnB, in the future.[35][29]
On July 19, 2024, he released his second studio album, Count Up Dracula.[36] A few months after, on October 31, 2024, he released a follow-up studio EP, Panic[37], which he claimed in an interview that he recorded this material live in-studio.[9][38] After both of these projects were released, they were met with widespread negative rating by users online, due to the muddy and raw overall production.[39]
As a result of his arrest, he has been removed from his group and label, gothangelz (under "Mandy") & 10K Projects.[40][41][42]
Lyrical Concerns
[edit]In the opening track of Count Up Dracula titled junkie, Dumont says, “Killed my girlfriend and it felt so good,” followed by the line, “I opened up her body and I ate her guts.”[43] These lyrics, which seemed like shock value initially, have recently been investigated by listeners after Dumont was arrested for attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend in 2024.[44][45] The resurfacing lyrics have intensified suspicion of Jaydes' music, with many users online interpreting his violent lyrics as an early warning to his alleged crime.[46][47]
Personal life
[edit]Early life
[edit]Dumont was born on February 24, 2006 to a Haitian father and a Dominican mother and was raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with two older sisters.[48] His father was an R&B artist.[9] As a child, he recalled listening to Jodeci, whom his father introduced him to, and Erykah Badu, whom his mother introduced him to.[35] He grew up with a passion for music, and started playing and writing music at a very young age.[7][9][19] He took piano lessons in elementary school in his early teenage years,[49] and he spent his free time playing soccer until he was 13.[9][19][35] At 16, he stopped attending high school and switched to online learning in favor of his music and also due to controversies at school.[7][19][35][50]
He claimed his favorite artists are GG Allin, Black Kray, XXXTentacion, and Playboi Carti.[9][29][35]
Arrest
[edit]On November 3, 2024, a warrant for Dumont's arrest was issued by the Broward County Sheriff's Office after a series of screenshots were published by the now-terminated Instagram account @exposingjaydes, allegedly stating that Dumont had stabbed his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend in the neck and arms with scissors and a box cutter when she denied sexual intercourse.[51]
A week later, on November 10, 2024, 9-1-1 was called on Dumont at a Denny's in Oakland Park, Florida when he was observed having a mental episode, wielding a knife. He was arrested at 3:28 a.m. local time, and was charged with attempted murder at arrest.[44][45][49][52]
As of December 12, 2024, Dumont's arrest charge of attempted murder was changed to aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.[53] He is now being held a bond of $10,000,[54][55] along with being placed on pre-trial release,[54] which includes wearing an ankle bracelet to monitor his location as part of his release up until his jury trial.[53][54][55][56]
