Joe A. Stephenson is a British director. He is the founder of the B Good Picture Company, with whom he has produced most of his films to date.
Career[edit]
Stephenson made his feature directorial debut with the 2015 film Chicken, adapted from Freddie Machin's stage play of the same name. It has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes critic rating [1], Mark Kermode rated the film at four out of five, comparing Scott Chambers's performance to that of ‘a young Leo DiCaprio’ [1] His second film was the acclaimed 2018 documentary McKellen: Playing the Part.[2] The film premiered at Rome International Film Festival, where The Hollywood Reporter praised the film as one which "should join the small circle of high-level docs about the acting profession able to inspire newcomers."[3]
Stephenson's third film, Doctor Jekyll, an adaptation of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde starring Eddie Izzard,[4] Scott Chambers, Lindsay Duncan, and Simon Callow was theatrically released in the UK, October 2023, by Hammer Film Productions.[5] Little White Lies (magazine) gave the film four out of five for enjoyment and wrote "the sort of horror that has you laughing one minute and throwing your popcorn in the air in fright the next… it looks like Hammer has returned from the dead."[6]
Stephenson’s upcoming film is Midas Man, a biopic about the manager of the Beatles, Brian Epstein, starring Eddie Marsan, Emily Watson, Jay Leno, Eddie Izzard, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, and Ed Speleers. Stephenson took over the troubled film from both Jonas Åkerlund and Sara Sugarman, but is understood to have directed 95% of the film.[7]
Other notable work includes being selected to create a piece of work for Tate Britain's major exhibition Queer Art [8][9] and directing 9 episodes of Channel 4's drama Ackley Bridge.
