Josafá Menezes da Silva (born 2 January 1959) is a Brazilian prelate of the Catholic Church. He is the current metropolitan archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Aracaju.[1] He previously served as an auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia (2005–2010), as bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Barreiras (2010–2019), and as metropolitan archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vitória da Conquista (2019–2024).[2]

Early years[edit]

Dom. Josafá Menezes da Silva was born on 2 January 1959 in Salinas da Margarida in State of Bahia, Brazil. He completed his studies in philosophy at the Catholic University of São Salvador da Bahia and in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. On 14 March 1989, he was ordained a priest by Dom. Frei. Lucas Moreira Neves, O.P. in the metropolitan archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia and also incardinated there. In 1989 to 2003 he held the roles as the pastor in the parish church of São João in Salvador, as deputy rector in the propedeutical seminary of Santa Terezinha de Lisieux, and as assistant archdiocesan bursar, coordinator of the archdiocesan Theological Commission; and professor at the Catholic University of Salvador, at the Social Institute of Bahia and at the João Paulo II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family in Salvador. In 1999 and 2001 he complete his studies at the Pontifical Lateran University and earned his postgraduate degree in theology and doctoral degree in Christian anthropology there.[3][4]

Episcopal career[edit]

On 12 January 2005 he was appointed as titular bishop of Gummi in Byzacena and auxiliary of São Salvador da Bahia, and received episcopal ordination on 10 March from Dom. Gerardo Majella Agnelo. On 15 December 2010 he was transferred as bishop of Barreiras. On 9 October 2019, he was named metropolitan archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vitória da Conquista.[5] On 13 March 2024, Pope Francis appointed him metropolitan archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Aracaju to replace Dom. Frei. João José da Costa, O. Carm. due to his resignation.[6]
