The Leicester Square stabbing was a stabbing attack that occurred on August 12, 2024, in Leicester Square, London, England.

Attack

[edit]

On August 12, 2024 at 11:34 AM,[1] a 32-year-old man wearing an Abbey Road t-shirt went into Leicester Square, a "tourist hotspot", and stabbed an 11-year-old girl. According to witnesses, the man seemed "mentally disturbed" as he randomly went up to the girl and put her in a headlock before stabbing her.[2] The victim of the attack was taken to a hospital and sustained non-life-threatening injuries according to the Westminster police, who also stated that the motives of the attack were not terror related.[3]

It was initially reported that the girl's 34-year-old mother had also been stabbed, but it was later confirmed that blood from her daughter's injuries had been mistaken for injuries of her own.[1] A 29-year-old security guard at a nearby shop who gave his name as Abdullah heard a scream before tackling the suspect and kicking the knife out of his grasp. He then administered first aid with the help of his colleagues.[4] The suspect was taken into custody by the police shortly after this.[5] An ambulance arrived shortly after at 11:36 AM to take the victim to a nearby hospital.[6]

The Metropolitan Police are not looking for any other suspects related to the stabbing,[7] stating in a Twitter post that they "don't believe there are any outstanding suspects."[8]

The next day on August 13, 2024, 32-year-old Ioan Pintaru appeared in court charged with possession of a bladed article and attempted murder. He was accused of stabbing the girl eight times in a random attack and was remanded in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for September 10, 2024 at the Old Bailey.[9]
