List of people killed in Bangladesh quota reform movement

The Bangladesh quota reform movement has been organized to demand a reduction in the quota for government jobs and a recruitment system based on merit.[1][2] Since 2013, there have been a total of three quota reform movements in the country: in 2013, in 2018, and most recently in 2024. The 2024 movement was particularly violent and resulted in numerous casualties. According to various news reports, over 266 people have been killed in the protests so far in 2024.[3][4][5]

  1. Abu Sayed - was a 12th batch student of the English department at Begum Rokeya University and one of the main coordinators of the university's quota movement.[6]
  2. Wasim Akram - was a student of Chittagong College and the joint convener of the college unit of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatra Dal.[7]
  3. Faisal Ahmed Shanto, 24, was a student of Omargani M.E.S College.[8]
  4. Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho - was a student of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP).[9]
  5. Tahir Zaman Priyo, 35, a journalist shot by police during protests at Science Lab area of Dhaka[9][10]
  6. Ridowan Sharif Riyad, a first-year student in the English department at Tongi Government College.[9]
  7. Ruhan, 20, died at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital.[11]
  8. Sajidur Rahman Omar, 22, Demra based IT worker.[12]
  9. Shahjahan, Mohakhali salesman.[12]
  10. Tuhin Ahmed, 26, died at Enam Medical College and Hospital after getting shot in a clash with police.[12]

Rudra Sen, a second-year student in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Polymer Science at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, drowned while trying to cross a canal with several friends in search of a safe shelter during a police chase amidst clashes between students and police and Chhatra League members during the quota reform movement on July 18.[13][14][15]

  7. Mustaque Miah, 24, who had come to buy shoes. He got caught in the clash and was killed by police gunfire.[26]
  8. Jahangir Alam, 45, worked in making quilts and mattresses.[27]
  9. Khalid Hasan, 16, college student shot dead by police after Asr prayer who were chasing a group of protestors[28]
  10. Mamum Hossain, 27, private car driver shot on a flyover while heading to his aunt's house[29]
  11. Saad Mahmud, 14, student shot dead by police when he went to investigate smoke on a nearby road[30]
  12. Maruf Hossain - 20, grade 12 student who was passing by Badda.[31]
  13. Mostofa Zaman Samudra, 17, shot after going out to see friends after Jumma prayers[32]
  14. Muhammad Faruk, 32, furniture shop employee shot while crossing a road after having lunch in Chittagong[33]
  15. Md. Saiful Islam, 35, a sharecropper shot while in Amuakanda Bazar in Mymensingh district to sell his crops. His grandfather died of a stroke after hearing the news.[34]
  16. Ahsan Habib, 25, office assistant in Cox's Bazar shot while looking out at quota clashes from his office building[35]
  17. Jisan Ahmed, 19, a small-time water vendor in Dhaka shot while peeking outside after hiding during a clash between protestors and police. His wife Mishti died by suicide nine days later.[36]
  18. Jihad Howlader, 25, PG student at Kabi Nazrul Govt. College, Dhaka, shot while going to a roadside hotel for lunch[37]
  19. Imran Khalifa, 26, nightguard in Gulshan shot while heading towards a market[38]
  20. Maruf Hossain, 21, IT freelancer who just completed final exams at Kushtia Polytechnic Institute, came to Dhaka for an internship and was shot dead in Banasree by BGB.[39][40][41]

  22. Mahmudur Rahman Soikot, 19, shopkeeper who was searching for an injured friend before being shot by police[43]
  23. Rabbi Miah, 22, student at Southeast University preparing for IELTS exam to study abroad. Shot by police when recording a clash between police and protestors from a verandah.[44]

  25. Mahmudul Hassan, 20, Electronics graduate from Lakshmipur Polytechnic Institute at an internship in Dhaka. Shot while returning to a mess with friends.[46]
