Manoj Malaviya is a 1986 batch Indian Police Service officer who is currently the State Police Advisor (SPA), West Bengal,[1][2] an ex-cadre post equivalent to DGP rank. Before this he served as the Director General of West Bengal Police from August 2021 to December 2023.[3] He has held several important positions in his career, including Additional Commissioner of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security in Delhi, and Deputy Commissioner of Police in Kolkata Police. He was promoted to the rank of Director General in 2017 and held the post till 2023.[4]

Early life and education

Manoj was born in Allahabad, (Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh. He is the great grandson of Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of Benaras Hindu University, and four time president of the Indian National Congress. His father Giridhar Malaviya is the Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. Manoj is a graduate in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Allahabad. He did his LLB from Calcutta University.

Career

Malaviya started his career in 1986 as a Sub-divisional Police Officer in Shantiniketan. He has also served in several positions, including as the Superintendent of Police of Nadia, Midnapore, and Bardhaman districts. He has also served as Deputy Commissioner in the Detective Department of the Kolkata Police.[5] He was also the Additional Commissioner of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security in Delhi. In 2017, he was promoted to the rank of Director General of Police and served as the Director General of West Bengal Police till December 2023 and was succeeded by Rajeev Kumar .[6][7]
