Marrigje Rikken

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marrigje Rikken is a Dutch art historian, curator, and museum director, specializing in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Netherlandish art.[1][2][3]

She received her PhD in art history from the University of Leiden, where she completed her dissertation on animal depictions in Southern Netherlandish art from 1550 to 1630 in 2016.[4] Rikken has published extensively on Netherlandish art, and particularly concerning artists from the Southern Netherlands.[5] Some of her notable works include contributions to the "CODART Canon" and the exhibition catalogue "Frans Hals and the Moderns."[6] She has also written essays and articles for various journals and books, covering topics from exotic animal paintings to color printing practices in Amsterdam during the seventeenth century.[7]

Rikken began her curatorial career as an assistant curator of seventeenth-century Dutch Golden Age painting at the Rijksmuseum from 2006 to 2008. She later lectured in art history at the University of Amsterdam from 2009 to 2015.[4]

In 2014, she joined the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem as an Associate Curator of Old Masters, later becoming the Head of Collections and Exhibitions, then Head of Collections and Presentations.[8][9] Her work at the Frans Hals Museum involved curating exhibitions such as "Frans Hals and the Moderns", and developing the museum's trans-historical collection and the Frans Hals Research Center.[10][11] She also oversaw several important restorations, including a monumental painting in the collection by Maarten van Heemskerk.[12]

In 2024, she was appointed as the director of Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar, succeeding the prior director from 2008-2021, Lidewij de Koekkoek.[13][14][15][16][17]
