Editnotice for the email pages

Regarding the /Emailnotice code that was recently added to this MediaWiki message:

Following discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 66#edit notice for special:emailuser, it's now possible to author an editnotice for ones Special:Emailuser subpage, by creating Special:MyPage/Emailnotice. The magic is in MediaWiki:Emailpagetext. See also Wikipedia talk:Editnotice#Emailnotice.

--David Göthberg (talk) 17:37, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Might be a good idea to implement this with a "header bar" that says "Notice from user XXX"; that's how I did this in another project. P.S. 4 emailnotice pages as of this moment. — AlexSm 19:02, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Bypass redirect

Please change privileged users to privileged users so as to bypass the redirect. Thanks! Logan Talk Contributions 03:27, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Additional note

It would probably be a good idea to mention that the recipient will also be given the sender's email address. Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 05:33, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

It says that at the very top. You want to reword it? Rd232 talk 08:43, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
Hahah, whoops. Actually, I was looking just at the bulleted list, which should in theory cover all the "important" points. The most important disclaimer—that the editor's email address will be disclosed—is somewhat hidden in the header box, which is similar in form to a banner ad, making it less likely to be read. Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 03:46, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
Fair point about banner blindness. Perhaps it would be best to split into "Privacy notes" and "Usage notes", with the email address issue and logging issue under "Privacy" (perhaps with a link to the privacy policy too). Rd232 talk 07:38, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
If there are no objections, I'm going to add the line
 • Your email address will be disclosed to the recipient.
to the end of the bulleted list. Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 09:22, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Hi, a couple of days ago a user contacted me by email. I didn't trust that user. Instead of replying to him in gmail, I went to his user page to 'email user' there - thinking that that way I'd avoid revealing my email address (which contains my name). Unfortunately, I didn't read the top of the email page where it gently warns me otherwise. It does look like a banner ad. I'm now pretty pissed off... but hey, I should have looked up (well, I was tired at the time, it was late, and my first time emailing via WP... etc). But anyway, couldn't we put a red exclamation mark at the top to warn people? Something that would definitely catch their attention? I'd hate someone else to be shafted by this system (why reveal the address at all, btw? Why not send everything through WP anonymously? That's how I had automatically assumed it would work. It's hardly technically difficult). Thx and sorry for the rant. Malick78 (talk) 15:54, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Red? Exclamation mark?

for example

"Self-outing not sufficiently highlighted" suggests users would benefit in a particularly sensitive way if the bold text was also red and/or there was a large warning icon instead of just the envelope/arrows picture. I agree. —Cupco 02:07, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

I've made the text red, but I couldn't find a good place for the warning icon. I think it's fine the way it is now, but feel free to reopen the request for a second opinion. Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 03:48, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

The link to checkusers would be clearer if it were expanded slightly. Please change

inspected by certain privileged users

to

inspected by certain privileged users

. As it's currently worded, it looks like the log can be looked at by certain CUs, but not by all of them. Nyttend (talk) 03:52, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

You've got mail

I think the sentence about notifying the recipient via You've got mail is no longer needed, and should be removed.

Users are now automatically alerted on Wikipedia when they receive an e-mail.

Guycn2 · 08:55, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Guycn2 Do you know if this is the default option in notifications? — xaosflux Talk 14:12, 26 July 2016 (UTC)
Yes, this is the default option. Guycn2 · 14:17, 26 July 2016 (UTC)
Change

FROM:

 • To notify users that you have e-mailed, leave them a talk page message. The You've got mail template is available for this purpose.

TO:

 • Sending e-mail generates a notification to the user by default. Optionally, you may leave a user talk message so they know to check their mail. cf. You've got mail

Guycn2 I'm sure there are some users that have this off, what do you think of the above? — xaosflux Talk 14:33, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

Great, although I don't think that many users disabled this option. Guycn2 · 14:41, 26 July 2016 (UTC)
Guycn2 I made a few more tweaks and de-emphasised the old template, this is live now - if you see any trouble please let me know. — xaosflux Talk 14:59, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

Custom Emailnotice not working

I've created my email notice and tested in email sender and didn't work. Please edit followed below: to

Thanks. Jerrykim306 (talk) 02:08, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

@Jerrykim306:  Works for me Special:EmailUser/Jerrykim306 shows your notice - you may need to clear your cache. Also, it is fine to not have a userpage - but threatening other editors with blocks if they were to edit it is not very civil. Most enwiki users that don't want to maintain a userpage will just redirect it to their user talk page. — xaosflux Talk 15:18, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
I'm sorry to say that, it does not show on my computer. I've tested on different computer and didn't work either. I've turned-off and on and still the same. I think this does have a technical problem about it. If it is possible, to prove it can you show me a screenshot that how did it work? Jerrykim306 (talk) 06:34, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
@Jerrykim306: I tried with different usernames, and different browsers - worked each time, see below. — xaosflux Talk 17:01, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

It also works for me. Do you have "en - English" as language at Special:Preferences? Otherwise you get a default MediaWiki message for your language. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:16, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
Yes, it should look like this up there. And you are using monobook. Thanks, I've changed my language to English and showed. I don't know why it does matter when other language is set to preferences. Anyway thanks. Jerrykim306 (talk) 23:06, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
Because then its not using the default message hack to load your personal page - note this will vary based on the person who is using your email page - you do not personally have to use that language setting to get others to see it; however there are many customized messages on enwiki - if you read English well your experience here will be better that way. — xaosflux Talk 23:16, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
Let me give a few more details. The MediaWiki software comes with default user interface messages in hundreds of languages. A wiki can adapt these messages but usually only does it for the default language of the wiki, in our case "en - English". MediaWiki:Emailpagetext is only displayed to users with the default language. Others see for example MediaWiki:Emailpagetext/ko if they select Korean. Editors at the English Wikipedia have coded MediaWiki:Emailpagetext to look for and display a user Emailnotice. This feature is not part of the normal MediaWiki software so MediaWiki:Emailpagetext/ko and other languages don't have it unless those messages are also adapted to include it. On the other hand, editnotices are part of the MediaWiki software so all users see your editnotice at User:Jerrykim306 (except mobile users, the mobile version omits many things). PrimeHunter (talk) 23:38, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
Oh, I see. So which means edit notice will show to all users but email will not. Thanks for answering. Jerrykim306 (talk) 06:30, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

The email notice doesn't work for en-GB. When I set my preferences to en, it displays custom email notices and the banner, but on en-GB it doesn't display anything at all (not even the yellow banner thing). MediaWiki:Emailpagetext/en-GB has the banner transcluded, so I don't know why it doesn't display anything at all. Does anyone know why? Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 19:29, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

@Dreamy Jazz: probably something with the conditionals - best option, only use en, the other en-x dialects are not really maintained. — xaosflux Talk 19:41, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
phab:T209068 would be a better fix than any of these messages trying to load other messages - but it needs work. — xaosflux Talk 19:44, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

I've reworked this message to remove the excessive wordiness, which is deterring people from actually reading it. Could we adopt the version at Special:Permalink/1020110104? Sdkbtalk 06:34, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Hmm. I always thought that the extra warning about disclosing emails was a deliberate duplication. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 11:12, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
So long as at least something similar to this appears we have the minimum needed: The email address you entered in your user preferences will appear as the "From" address of the email. — xaosflux Talk 13:34, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
Jo-Jo Eumerus, yeah, I think it was intentional, but it's not good UX, for the reasons I spoke to here. People are more likely to read the disclaimer if it appears only once, bolded in a short message, as opposed to if it appears twice in a super long message with several other points also shouting for attention. Sdkbtalk 18:37, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
Oshwah, I noticed you copy editing the notice today, so this might be of interest. Sdkbtalk 04:35, 7 May 2021 (UTC)
Sdkb - Thanks for the ping! From first glance, I don't see an issue with the changes. However, I think it's still important to note at the top that the sender's email address will be given to the recipient - just so that it's clear. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:39, 7 May 2021 (UTC)
Yep, I moved the bullet point with that info to the top. I removed the duplication, though, for the reasons I mentioned in the VPR discussion linked above. Sdkbtalk 04:43, 7 May 2021 (UTC)
@Sdkb: is that 20210427 version still the one you want used? — xaosflux Talk 10:29, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: Yep. The only thing is that, because of the edit requests below, it may need to be double checked for lint errors. Sdkbtalk 15:42, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
Done looked good on my tests at testwiki, rolled in to production. Any admin should revert if breaking changes were introduced. — xaosflux Talk 19:55, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

Disclaimer size

@Izno, re this edit, would it be possible to retain the smaller text at the bottom? That stuff is really just a disclaimer, and it shouldn't be emphasized as much as the more important information at the top. Sdkbtalk 18:50, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

14px of the list is nearly identical to the material below with my machine. It's all now 85%. If someone else wants to bump some other sizing up or around, feel free, but please use relative sizing. Izno (talk) 18:55, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
@Izno, that's not quite what I meant. I think the text below the horizontal bar should be small, whereas the bulleted points can be normal-sized, as many of them are important. Sdkbtalk 19:24, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
