Proposed amended version

[edit]

Please see below a proposed amended version of the text. I'd welcome some feedback from other users on whether this is an improvement, or not. Suggestions on what to put in place of the xxxs would be particularly useful! --Dweller (talk) 09:06, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear $WATCHINGUSERNAME,

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

This email has been sent to you to notify you of a change to a page on your watchlist. This is a new feature for English Wikipedia, that was enabled in May 2011. If you would like to switch it off, or tweak your settings for this or any other page in your watchlist, please visit xxxxxxx.

The Wikipedia page $PAGETITLE has been $CHANGEDORCREATED on $PAGEEDITDATE by $PAGEEDITOR. See $PAGETITLE_URL for the current revision.

$NEWPAGE

The edit summary left was: $PAGESUMMARY $PAGEMINOREDIT

You can contact the editor by email: $PAGEEDITOR_EMAIL or onwiki: $PAGEEDITOR_WIKI

Please note: until you visit the page, there will be no other notifications of further changes.

It seems pointless to me: you give less visibility to the actual information of the email, making it less useful and then more annoying, to show an outdated message which is no longer true for active editors (who have already received such notifications) and is not needed for less active editors (who won't find anything strange in similar notifications when they'll receive one, given that it's the standard on more or less all websites). Nemo 09:55, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's a fair point. Ideally, this would have been considered and implemented before it rolled out. How about reversing the order of the sections? --Dweller (talk) 10:12, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that some Users become panicky about someone probly hacking their account or some other bad omen... Not knowing the reason for sudden change might be ugly surprise even though the change itself is seen usefull. This my proposel bellow is just small tweak of status quo:

Dear $WATCHINGUSERNAME,

The Wikipedia page $PAGETITLE has been $CHANGEDORCREATED on $PAGEEDITDATE by $PAGEEDITOR, see $PAGETITLE_URL for the current revision.
$NEWPAGE
Editor's summary: $PAGESUMMARY $PAGEMINOREDIT
Contact the editor: mail: $PAGEEDITOR_EMAIL wiki: $PAGEEDITOR_WIKI
There will be no other notifications in case of further changes unless you visit this page. :You could also reset the notification flags for all your watched pages on your watchlist.

And of course I suggest, that the notion: "This feature in English Wikipedia is enabled since May 2011. " would be there only for limited time, let say for three months, then there will be no point in keeping that formulation any more. With regards --Reo + 21:13, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There's no point pfaffing around endlessly; this needs to be done, as users are already getting talk messages and hence emails. So I've gone ahead made some changes, linking to Help:Email notification which I've created. I've also removed some text which relates to email notifications for watched pages more generally; the feature is (AFAIK) only enabled on English Wikipedia for user talk pages, so that's quite unnecessary confusion. Rd232 talk 22:34, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good it serves nice together. Actually did I overlooked something yesterday? It seems from history, that the note about .. started since... was already present(?) So then sorry for bother. Anyway, it was not endless :). I hope it will work well as it is. --Reo + 08:07, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"was already present" - no, that's my bad, I should have saved the original default form from the software for easier comparison (I suppose I could delete the page and do it over, but I'm not quite sure it's worth it). You can see the original here at MediaWiki.org. Rd232 talk 09:34, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Update

[edit]

After five months it's probably better to remove the notice about the local enabling. Nemo 10:06, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Note that EnotifWatchlist is now enabled on en.wiki. --Nemo 20:33, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Message no longer compatible, please fix

[edit]

Hello, I'm writing you because your custom version of this message will probably break today or when the new version of MediaWiki is enabled on this wiki, and you need to delete or fix it, see details of the changes and instructions. Thanks, Nemo 17:57, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Added a {{sudo}} tag. --MZMcBride (talk) 01:47, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This message, however, should just be blanked and the default restored IMHO. The wiki is in wmf6 so it doesn't suffer from raw $PAGEINTRO but only $CHANGEDORCREATED due to incompatibility of its custom enotif; all the custom parts are outdated anyway, see #Update (a year ago), keeping the default will avoid problems. --Nemo 09:39, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I've deleted the page to restore the default. — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 10:08, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
