Memed Gunawan (born 15 February 1948) is an Indonesian researcher and writer.

Early life and education

Gunawan was born on 15 February 1948 in Kuningan, West Java.[1] He went to the Faculty of Agriculture at IPB University majoring in agricultural statistics in 1974, and earned his Ph.D n agricultural and applied economics from the University of Minnesota i in 1988.[1]

Personal life

Gunawan is married to Sylvia Muthalib, a physician, and has had two children, Ryaldi Pratama and Bayu Madendra.[1] They had five grandchildren, Alyssa, Radya, Myiesha, Nana, and Zieven.[1]

Career

Gunawan started his career as a writer by became a magazine manager during his time as a student at IPB University and wrote several short stories in Sundanese and Mangle language.[1] Since 1975, he worked as a researcher at Agricultural Socioeconomic Research Center, Research and Development Agency, and Department of Agriculture.[1] He then moved to several offices in 1989, such as Planning Bureau, Department of Agriculture, Office of the Coordinating Minister for Industry and Trade, and the Agribusiness Agency.[1] In 2001, Gunawan was appointed as Secretary General of the Department of Agriculture until 2005.[1][2] He then served as Food and Agriculture Organizer at United Nations representative in Pakistan and then moved to Lesotho from December 2007 until 2009.[1]

Gunawan also published two books that contains his poetry collection with title Ladang Berselimut Kabut and Setangkai Padi Seisi Negeri (both 2004), and Perjalanan Nurani ke Tanah Merdeka (2012).[1] He then published several novels, such as Kaktus Berbunga and Jalan Prahara (both 2009), and Catatan Paimin: Manusia-Manusia Yang Terlupakan, Debat Kusir Para Birokrat, Garuda Berduka: Kisah Manusia Resah, and Ilalang Di Tanah Afrika (all 2010).[1] In 2011, Gunawan published six novels, such as Hujan Putih di Serambi Cinta, Bong: Anak-Anak Langit, Menantang Takdir: Perempuan Pencari Cinta, Namaku NIO, Mengelas Cinta di Bengkel Tua, and Buih Rindu dari Saudi.[1]
