Michael Gallup (born March 4, 1996) is an American football wide receiver for the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Butler Community College before transferring to Colorado State, where he was a consensus All-American in 2017. Gallup was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Early years[edit]

Gallup attended Monroe Area High School in Monroe, Georgia, where he played football, baseball, basketball, and ran track.[1] Gallup started focusing on football as a junior, playing quarterback in a triple option offense.

As a senior, Gallup played wide receiver and running back, registering 28 receptions for 637 yards (22.8-yard average) and 10 touchdowns to go along with 37 carries for 484 yards (13.1-yard average) and seven touchdowns. He helped his team advance to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.[citation needed]

College career[edit]

Gallup moved onto Butler Community College to improve his grades.[2] As a freshman in 2014, Gallup led the team with 780 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. Against Dodge City Community College, he tallied five receptions for 287 yards and three touchdowns.

In 2015, Gallup played in only three games due to an ankle injury and had nine receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown.[3]

In 2016, Gallup transferred to Colorado State University.[4] He started slow in his first season, but began to increase his production after his third game against the University of Northern Colorado, when he had 4 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. Gallup played in all 13 games (11 starts), recording 76 receptions for 1,272 yards (tied for first in the conference) and 14 touchdowns.[5]

As a senior in 2017, Gallup was a finalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award.[6] He started all 13 games, posting 100 receptions (school record) for 1,413 yards and seven touchdowns.[7]

Gallup finished his career with various accomplishments. He had three of the top eight single-game all-time receiving performances in school history, four of the top ten games in school history for receptions, ranked second in single-season receiving touchdowns (14), only player in school history to catch three or more touchdowns three times, record for single-season receptions (100), second-best single-season receiving yards (1,413), ranked fifth in career receptions (176).

Professional career[edit]

Pre-draft[edit]

On November 20, 2017, it was announced that Gallup had accepted his invitation to play in the Senior Bowl.[8] On January 27, 2018, Gallup caught three passes for 60-yards and was part of Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph’s North team that lost 45–16 to the South coach by Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien.[9]

Gallup attended the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and completed all of the combine and positional drills. On March 7, 2018, he participated at Colorado State's pro day and performed the 40-yard dash (4.45s), 20-yard dash (2.63s), 10-yard dash (1.57s), broad jump (10'8"), short shuttle (4.52s), and three-cone drill (7.09s). At the conclusion of the pre-draft process, Gallup was projected to be a third round pick by NFL draft experts and scouts. He was ranked as the 10th best wide receiver prospect in the draft by DraftScout.com and was ranked the 14th best wide receiver by Scouts Inc.[10][11]

2018 season[edit]

The Dallas Cowboys selected Gallup in the third round with the 81st overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.[13] He was the ninth wide receiver drafted in 2018.[14]

On May 21, 2018, the Cowboys signed Gallup to a four-year, $3.52 million contract that includes a signing bonus of $889,980.[15]

Gallup made his NFL debut during the season-opening 16–8 loss to the Carolina Panthers, catching one pass for nine yards.[16] During a Week 7 20–17 road loss to the Washington Redskins, Gallup had three receptions for 81 yards and his first NFL touchdown on a 49-yard pass from Dak Prescott.[17]

Gallup finished his rookie year with 33 receptions for 507 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games and eight starts.[18] The Cowboys finished atop the NFC East with a 10–6 record and qualified for the playoffs. During the Wild Card Round against the Seattle Seahawks, Gallup recorded two receptions for 18 yards and a touchdown in the narrow 24–22 victory.[19] In the Divisional Round against the Los Angeles Rams, he caught six passes for 119 yards as the Cowboys lost on the road by a score of 30–22.[20]

2019 season[edit]

During the season-opening 35–17 victory over the New York Giants, Gallup caught seven passes for 158 yards.[21] In the next game against the Washington Redskins, he had six receptions for 68 yards before missing the next two games due to knee surgery.[22][23]

Gallup returned from surgery in time for the Week 5 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, in which he recorded seven receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown as the Cowboys lost by a score of 34–24.[24] During a Week 9 37–18 victory over the Giants on Monday Night Football, Gallup caught two passes for 33 yards and a touchdown.[25] In the next game against the Minnesota Vikings on NBC Sunday Night Football, he had four receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown during the 28–24 loss.[26] The following week against the Detroit Lions, Gallup recorded nine receptions for 148 yards in the 35–27 road victory.[27]

During a Week 14 31–24 road loss to the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football, Gallup caught six passes for 109 yards.[28] In the regular-season finale against the Redskins, he had five receptions for 98 yards and three touchdowns during the 47–16 victory.[29]

Gallup finished his second professional season with 66 receptions for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns in 14 games and 12 starts.[30]

2020 season[edit]

During a Week 3 38–31 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Gallup had six receptions for 138 yards and a touchdown.[31] During a Week 13 34–17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Gallup had seven receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown.[32] Two weeks later against the San Francisco 49ers, he caught three passes for 26 yards and a touchdown during the 41–33 victory.[33] In the next game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Gallup recorded six receptions for 121 yards and two touchdowns as the Cowboys won by a score of 37–17.[34]

Gallup finished the 2020 season with 59 receptions for 843 yards and five touchdowns in 16 games and 15 starts.[35]

2021 season[edit]

During the narrow season-opening 31–29 road loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Gallup had four receptions for 36 yards before leaving the game in the second half with a calf strain.[36] He was placed on injured reserve on September 13.[37]

Gallup was activated on November 13 in time for the Week 10 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.[38] In that game, he recorded three receptions for 42 yards as the Cowboys won by a score of 43–3.[39] Two weeks later against the Las Vegas Raiders, Gallup had five receptions for 106 yards as the Cowboys lost in overtime by a score of 36–33.[40] In the next game against the New Orleans Saints, he caught five passes for 36 yards and his first touchdown of the season as the Cowboys won on the road by a score of 27–17.[41]

During a Week 17 25–22 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Gallup had three receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown.[42] However, he tore his ACL on the touchdown reception and was placed back on injured reserve several days later.[43] He finished the 2021 season with 35 receptions for 445 yards and two touchdowns in nine games and eight starts.[44]

2022 season[edit]

On March 13, 2022, Gallup signed a five-year, $62.5 million extension with the Cowboys.[45]

Gallup returned from his injury in Week 4 against the Washington Redskins, recording two receptions for 24 yards and a touchdown during the 25–10 victory.[46] During a Week 13 54–19 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, Gallup had four receptions for 23 yards and two touchdowns.[47] Three weeks later against the Philadelphia Eagles, he caught four passes for 36 yards and a touchdown as the Cowboys won by a score of 40–34.[48]

Gallup finished the 2022 season with 39 receptions for 424 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games and 11 starts.[49] In the Wild Card Round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he had five receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown during the 31–14 road victory.[50]

2023 season[edit]

During a Week 3 28–16 road loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Gallup had six receptions for 92 yards.[51] During a Week 10 49–17 victory over the New York Giants, he caught two passes for 70 yards and his first touchdown of the season.[52] During a Week 14 33–13 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, Gallup recorded three receptions for 48 yards and his second touchdown of the season.[53] Overall, he finished the 2023 season with 34 receptions for 418 yards and two touchdowns in 17 games and 13 starts.[54]

The Cowboys finished atop the NFC East with a 12–5 record.[55] Gallup's most productive performance of the season came in the postseason against the Green Bay Packers during the Wild Card Round, where he recorded six receptions for 103 yards in the 48–32 loss.[56]

Las Vegas Raiders[edit]

On April 29, 2024, Gallup signed a one-year contract worth up to $3 million with the Las Vegas Raiders.[57]

Personal life[edit]

Gallup was adopted when he was 10 months old.[58] His brother, Andrew, died by suicide in 2018.[59]
