Moby Train is a proposed monumental sculpture by François Schuiten and Pierre Matter, commissioned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS/SNCB). Scheduled for completion in 2026, this sculpture will be located at the Van Praet roundabout between Docks Bruxsel and Schaerbeek railway station in Brussels. The design features an old locomotive, '5404', encased in a whale-like structure, symbolizing both rail and maritime heritage.[1]
Design and Symbolism[edit]
The Moby Train is inspired by Herman Melville's Moby Dick, with the design emphasizing themes of movement, power, and fluidity. The installation aims to reflect the significance of green mobility, as indicated by its green color scheme, representing environmental sustainability. Landscape architect Anne-Marie Sauvat is designing the surrounding area with plant elements that mimic sea waves, enhancing the visual impact of the sculpture and reinforcing the aquatic and locomotive themes.[1]
Collaboration and Support[edit]
The project is a collaborative effort involving Train World, the Brussels-Capital Region, the City of Brussels, and the Port of Brussels. These organizations aim to create a landmark that highlights Brussels' historical connection to both rail and water transport. The installation is intended to serve as a symbol of the city's commitment to sustainable mobility and its rich transportation heritage.[1]
