Monika Jerominek (born 17 March 1974) is a Polish iconographer, painter, and graphic artist and Germanist. She is the daughter of the Silesian painter Edeltrauda Jerominek [pl]. She is particularly associated with Silesia.

Education

[edit]

In 1994, Monika Jerominek graduated from the State High School of Fine Arts in Katowice, specializing in applied arts – jewelry. She studied at the Institute of Art at the University of Silesia (branch in Cieszyn), majoring in art education. She obtained her diploma in painting in 1999 in the studio of Professor Norbert Witek.[1] She wrote her master's thesis under the supervision of Urszula Szuścik [pl] on the topic "Eastern Church Art – Tradition and Its Contemporary Continuation."

From 2000 to 2003, she studied German at the Teacher Training College of Foreign Languages in Sosnowiec. In 2003, she completed her studies at the University of Opole, Faculty of Philology, majoring in German philology, and graduated with a bachelor's degree.

Activities

[edit]

Since 2007, she has co-founded the Silesian School of Iconography, conducting various practical and theoretical workshops. In 2017, after the restructuring of SSI, she became the Dean of the Faculty of Iconography and Graphics "Who is like God?" in Bytom, a position she held until 2022. She has been closely associated with the avant-garde group in the world of iconography, creating contemporary icons in Nowica at the "International Icon Writing Workshops in Nowica."[2] With a group of friends from Nowica, she co-organizes annual workshops and a series of exhibitions in Poland, Ukraine, and other European countries.[3][4][5][6]

Simultaneously, she has worked as a teacher of German, visual arts, art, and painting (especially icon painting) at various levels of education: from primary schools, through secondary schools, to specialized studies at universities. She is a co-creator and graduate of the postgraduate studies "Iconography. Studies of the Christian East" at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Opole. She is a teacher and, parallel to her professional work, writes icons, paints oil paintings and watercolors, and creates graphics using the drypoint technique. She is also dedicated to educational work, imparting knowledge and skills to others. She has many national and international exhibitions to her credit.[7] She has developed her own distinctive, recognizable iconographic style, often on a circular format, with extremely rich symbolism and sharp contrasts in the features of the depicted figures. In her iconographic color palette, she uses clear, intense colors from the world of Frida Kahlo.[8]
