"Nasty" is a song by American singer and songwriter Tinashe. It was released on April 12, 2024, via her independent record label, Tinashe Music Inc. and Nice Life Recording Company. The song's release coincided with her performance at the 2024 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.[1] The song serves as the lead single of her upcoming seventh studio album Quantum Baby. It was written by Tinashe, and Ricky Reed and produced by Zack Sekoff alongside Reed. "Nasty" debuted at number 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2024, becoming Tinashe's fifth entry and first solo song on the chart as an independent artist.

Background and release[edit]

Tinashe initially teased the song on a livestream via her Instagram on Valentine's Day 2024. On April 3, Tinashe signed a worldwide publishing deal with Position Music, obtaining the publishing rights to her future releases from that point forward and her previous album BB/Ang3l.[2]

She officially teased her forthcoming seventh studio album, Quantum Baby, with a trailer shared on her various social media platforms on April 8, where Quantum Baby was officially confirmed by her to serve as the second installment of a trilogy of albums. The following day she officially announced the single set to drop that Friday. In an interview with Forbes, "Nasty" was dubbed as "perfect pre-summer song". She stated “I really wanted to have that energy going into the season, just feeling like I want to have fun, be outside, get sweaty, get nasty, party energy all year... I think it's kind of all been leading up to this, and I haven't had a release in the summer in a while. So I'm really excited to be rolling it out in this way.”[3]

On June 18, 2024, Tinashe released Match My Freak EP, comprising the single version of "Nasty" and five remixes.[4]

Commercial performance[edit]

On the chart dated June 15, 2024, "Nasty" debuted at number 90 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Tinashe's overall fifth entry, second as a lead artist and first solo song on the chart. It also marked her first Hot 100 entry in almost eight years,[5] and peaked at number 69 the following week.[6] The song also peaked at number 19 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs on the chart dated June 22, 2024.[7]

Music video[edit]

The accompanying music video was released the same day as the single, on April 12, 2024. It was directed Jonah Haber and choreographed by Jojo Gomez.[8] The video starts with Tinashe being ‘Nasty’ from working on her car. She then proceeds to dance with her dancers. Furthermore, it shows Tinashe in a desert being chased by several drones. At the end of the video, she retrieves a weapon from a car and shoots a drone down before driving away. The video ends with ‘2.B Continued’ on the screen.

Live performances[edit]

Tinashe performed "Nasty" live for the first time at the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Mojave stage on April 12 and 19.[9] She then performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on June 12.[10]

Cultural impact[edit]

The song initially went viral on X after a user posted a video from TikTok of a British dancer dancing to soca music with his instructor, with "Nasty" replacing the original audio.[11] The song gained further traction on TikTok.[12]
