Nazir Ahmad (born 1 January 1950; Urdu: نذیر احمد,) is a neurosurgeon from Pakistan[2] who has made contributions to the field of neurosurgery, particularly in the modernization of neurosurgical practices. He has published over 60 research articles in the field of neurosurgery.[3]

He has been credited with laying the foundation for the Punjab Institute of Neurosciences, a neurosurgical institution in Pakistan.[4][5]

Career

[edit]

He is credited with having introduced the surgical treatment for cerebral arteriovenous malformations and aneurysms.[6] He is a specialist in stereotactic surgery for movement disorders.[7] Currently, he is supervising studies that compare plate and screw systems with cage devices that could be used to correct spinal instability.[8]

Ahmad has developed techniques for performing neurosurgical procedures using a microscope;[9] using a flexible tube with a camera and light on the end; using small incisions to perform surgery on the spine; and using small catheters and instruments to perform surgery on the blood vessels of the brain and spinal cord.

Ahmad is also the founder of PINS (Punjab Institute of Neurosciences),[5] a former Vice President of Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons (ACNS),[10] and Chief Editor of the Pakistan Journal of Neurological Surgery (PJNS).[11]
