Outbreak is a 1987 medical thriller written by Robin Cook. It follows Dr. Melissa Blumenthal, an epidemiologist researching an Ebola virus outbreak in the United States. As she dives into its origin and spread, she uncovers that all is not what it seems.[1]
This book is unrelated to the 1995 movie with a similar plot also called Outbreak. In 1995, the book was adapted into a film and released under the title "Robin Cook's Virus", later renamed Formula for Death, starring Nicollette Sheridan and William Devane.[2]
Synopsis
[edit]When the director of a Los Angeles health maintenance clinic succumbs to an untreatable and aggressive virus that kills him and seven of his patients, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta responds with a state of high alert. The virus must be contained to prevent an outbreak on par with the Black Death, sending shockwaves through the medical community.[3]
Assigned by the CDC to investigate, Dr. Marissa Blumenthal—a dedicated and tenacious epidemiologist—finds herself at the center of a growing crisis. What initially appears to be a localized health scare quickly spirals out of control as similar outbreaks occur in unrelated geographical areas across the country. Each outbreak shares unsettling commonalities: the locations are always health-care facilities, and the victims are exclusively physicians and their patients, leading Marissa to suspect that this is no ordinary virus.
As the death toll rises, Marissa uncovers disturbing clues that point to a far more sinister possibility—deliberate human involvement. Her investigation takes her deep into the underbelly of the medical and pharmaceutical world, where she encounters powerful forces determined to keep the truth buried. With lives at stake, she faces mounting pressure from all sides, and the boundaries between natural disaster and calculated sabotage blur.
As Marissa races against time to stop the spread, she must not only combat the virus but also unmask those responsible before the next deadly outbreak hits. The stakes have never been higher, and Marissa soon realizes that stopping the virus may require her to risk everything—even her own life.
