The Panagia Krina (Greek: Παναγία η Κρίνα) is a Byzantine temple, located on the road towards the settlement of Sklavia and one kilometer after Vavyls, from a path to the right through olive groves and fields.[1] It is one of the few individual local copies of the catholicon of the New Monastery of Chios.[2]
Chronological
[edit]The chronological placement of the construction of the temple is problematic. The loss of the written date 1287[3] on the southern arcosolium may have been related to the construction of the temple. The beginning of the 13th or the end of the 12th c. perhaps constitute the possible construction periods of the temple.[4] An inscription on the iconostasis of the island of Paros Mau(or)l o k [...]+etous, stf[..] may refer to its abbot named Manuel but we do not know his relationship with Paros.
The first two letters of the number of years from the creation of the world are f and f. This means that the date can range between the years 6500 and 6599, that is, from 992 to 1091 after Christ. So as the Krina is a copy of the catholicon of the New Monastery, we would place the construction of the iconostasis and the construction of the church in the forty-five years 1056–1091.[5] In the exonarthex we have an inscription I by the work of Mr. Ioa.keim monk I and abbot 1ZMZ'. It is probably read as 1747, which means that then the construction of the later exonartix is chronologically placed and that until then Krina was a functioning monastery.[6]
