The Pedro Fire is an active wildfire burning in Mariposa and Tuolumne counties in California. The fire began on July 30, 2024, and the cause is currently under investigation. The fire has destroyed one structure and has prompted evacuations in multiple areas. Up to 350 structures are threatened by the fire, and the fire is 10% contained as of July 31, 2024.[1] The fire has destroyed one structure and damaged 3 others.[2] 688 personnel are currently dispatched to extinguish the fire.[2]

The fire is currently the most recent of the 2024 California wildfire season.

Progression

The fire started near Highway 132 and Piney Creek Road at around 12:50 p.m. on July 30,[3] located west of Coulterville near the Don Pedro Reservoir.[4] The fire is described as having a "moderate to dangerous rate of spread."[1] The fire is currently burning in dry, grassy areas.[1]

Evacuations

The fire has caused the evacuations of several areas in Mariposa and Tuolemne counties, including the Barrett Cove Marina and Recreation area, Piney Creek Road, Arbolada Road and the Hunters Valley Area.[5] 788 personnel were dispatched to the fire, and air tankers have been sent out to extinguish the fire,[3][1] and on August 1 that number dropped to 664.[2]

The fire has burned across 3,647 acres of land as of July 31, and has been confirmed to have destroyed one building and damaged 3 others.[2] ~350 buildings remained threatened by the fire.[4]
