The Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL are a group of Android smartphones designed, developed, and marketed by Google as part of the Google Pixel product line. They serve as the successor to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, respectively. Sporting a redesigned appearance and powered by the fourth-generation Google Tensor system-on-chip, the phones are heavily integrated with Gemini-branded artificial intelligence features.

The Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL were officially announced on August 13, 2024, at the annual Made by Google event, and will be released in the United States on August 22 and September 4.

History

[edit]
The Pixel 9 (R) and 9 Pro XL (L), both in "Porcelain" color

The Pixel 9 series was approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in July 2024.[3] After previewing the Pro model the same month,[4][5] Google officially announced the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL on August 13, alongside the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel Watch 3, at the annual Made by Google event.[6] Multiple observers noted the unusually early timing of the launch event, which was traditionally held in October after Apple's annual launch of the new iPhone. Commentators described this as an attempt to "outshine" Apple, its longtime rival, and demonstrate its artificial intelligence prowess.[7][8][9] All three phones became available for pre-order the same day; the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL will be available on August 22 while the Pro will be available on September 4, the latter alongside the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.[10]

Google Pixel 9

[edit]

The Pixel 9 features a 6.3-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2424 pixels and a refresh rate ranging from 60Hz to 120Hz. The panel has 1800nits of local brightness and 2700nits of peak brightness. The screen is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 coating.[11]

For optics, the device continues to sport dual rear camera setup, comprising a 50-megapixel wide lens and a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens. The device supports Super Res Zoom up to 8x, allowing users to capture detailed images even from a distance.[11]

It packs a 4700mAh battery with support for 45W fast charging, and it is also compatible with wireless charging. The Pixel 9 comes with 12GB of RAM and offers storage options of 128GB and 256GB.[11]

There are four available colors: Peony (pink), Wintergreen (a pale green), Porcelain (an ecru or off-white), and Obsidian (a dark charcoal gray).

Google Pixel 9 Pro

[edit]

Pixel 9 Pro features a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED panel with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 coating, a higher resolution of 1280 x 2856 pixels and an adaptive refresh rate that can range from 1Hz to 120Hz. The camera system on the Pixel 9 Pro is upgraded with a triple rear setup, adding a 48-megapixel telephoto lens to the mix. The primary camera setup also includes a 50-megapixel Octa PD wide camera and a 48-megapixel Quad PD ultrawide camera.[11]

There are four available colors: Rose Quartz (light pink), Hazel (a medium gray-green), Porcelain (an ecru or off-white), and Obsidian (a dark charcoal gray).

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL

[edit]

It features a larger 6.8-inch 24-bit LTPO OLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 coating and a resolution of 1344 x 2992 pixels. Like its Pro sibling, it is powered by the Tensor G4 processor and features the same triple rear camera system, capable of achieving 30x Super Res Zoom.[11]

The same four colors for the Pro are also available for the Pro XL: Rose Quartz (light pink), Hazel (a medium gray-green), Porcelain (an ecru or off-white), and Obsidian (a dark charcoal gray).

Hardware

[edit]

Google Pixel 9

[edit]

Pixel 9 is powered by Google's Tensor G4 processor, paired with the Titan M2 security co-processor, promising not only fast performance but also multi-layer hardware security.[11]

Google Pixel 9 Pro

[edit]

Pixel 9 Pro also has a 4700mAh battery, and the device supports both 45W wired, just like the Pixel 9. The wireless charging support is also available here. The Pixel 9 Pro is equipped with 16GB of RAM and offers storage capacities from 128GB up to 1TB.[11]

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL

[edit]

It has a relatively larger battery with a 5,060mAh battery. The device is available with 16GB of RAM and is offered in a wide range of storage options, including 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.[11]

Pixel Screenshots

[edit]

In August 2024, Google announced a new AI-powered app called Pixel Screenshots for its Pixel 9 series that allows users to save, organize, and recover information from screenshots.[12]

The feature uses Google’s on-device Gemini Nano AI model to analyse the contents of the screenshots, make it searchable, and resurface it.[13][14]

Marketing

[edit]

An "after party" livestream hosted by actress Keke Palmer and featuring celebrity guest appearances followed the Made by Google event.[15]
