Pope Francis' visit to Indonesia is a state visit and pastoral made by Pope Francis, in his capacity as the supreme pontiff of the world's Catholic Church and head of state of the Vatican City. The visit will take place from 3 to 6 September 2024 and will visit Jakarta.[1]
The Indonesian government, through President Joko Widodo has sent an official invitation to the Holy See regarding this visit.[2] The invitation was officially delivered by the Apostolic Nuncio (Ambassador) of the Holy See of the Vatican to Indonesia, His Eminence Mgr. Piero Pioppo on March 25, 2024, to the Holy See. The Indonesian government hopes that this visit will not only bring significance to the Catholics in Indonesia, but also to the harmony of all religious communities. Pope Francis himself had planned to visit Indonesia since 2020, but the visit could not be carried out due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[3]
According to Indonesian Ambassadors to the Holy See, Michael Trias Kuncahyono Pope Francis's visit to Indonesia will be a historic visit. Previous papal visits to Indonesia were made by Pope Paul VI on 3–4 December 1970[4] and Pope John Paul II on 8–12 October 1989.[5]
