- 1 January 1971: The Arusha Agreement, signed between the European Union and the East African states of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda the previous September, entered into force.
- 10 January 1920: The British mandate over Tanganyika came into force.
- 12 January 1964: The Zanzibar Revolution saw the overthrow of the Sultan of Zanzibar and his mainly Arab government by local African revolutionaries. Sheikh Abeid Karume became the first President of Zanzibar.
