Maintenance

[edit]

This is nice, but who is going to maintain this?evrik 20:04, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean? Medvedenko 20:16, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On another note Wikipedia:Portal/Directory#Geography listed me as the coordinator. I want to help, but don't think i have the time as the coordinator of this. I am hoping that others will volunteer. --South Philly 00:41, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I put your name there along with mine, because you had been maintaining the portal since creating it and I plan to help as long as I contribute to Wikipedia. Medvedenko 01:19, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hi evrik (still around? others have disappeared...): Seems no one is maintaining this portal anymore, at least not monthly, maybe decadely? ;) Should really choose a single featured image, article & bio that's more useful and welcoming (rather than riots, etc.) for the occasional passer-by (about 30 a day based on page stats). Maybe a recent skyline image, and either the Independence Hall or City Hall article (though not 'featured', still fairly good), and Ben Franklin's bio, or a current sports figure, or the mayor? Also, the news box could be removed in favor of just the link at bottom of page, and DYK/quotes boxes could be made short static lists, or just removed unless someone wants to keep them updated regularly. This editor's not volunteering for regular maintenance, but will at least do the previous suggestions, probably in a few days unless there's an objection. Cheers. Brian W. Schaller (talk) 01:47, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I stopped tending to this at least eight years ago. --evrik (talk) 20:34, 17 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK, looks like the boxes are randomized via the template - didn't realize that. Still, there are a lot of (comically) disparaging "quotes" (attributed but w/o sources) throughout the archives. Oh well, seems even most Fluffyans hate their own city. ;) Anyway, the news box link provides no real updated recent news, and the DYK box seems like it wasn't used after the first few months, a decade ago. Time to remove those boxes as they're just wasting reader's time & screen space... Done. Brian W. Schaller (talk) 07:29, 17 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to improve this. --evrik (talk) 20:34, 17 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Monthly Notes

February 2010

[edit]

I'm a rookie at Wikipedia, but I would like to post this as the featured picture for February 2010: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Philadelphia/Selected_picture_archive If anyone could do this for me, I appreciate it. I've had no luck. Thanks. BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 03:25, 1 February 2010 (UTC)BoringHistoryGuy[reply]

I added the picture for you. The pictures are randomly selected from a list and are not selected for an entire month. Medvedenko (talk) 02:43, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Feature Status

[edit]

Do we want to apply for feature status? --South Philly 00:41, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changes

[edit]

Arts

[edit]

Interesting idea... think you should have asked first? --evrik 15:00, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder what others think about keeping this section. I don't think there enough good articles related to Philadelphia to fill up three infoboxes. Medvedenko 20:41, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sports

[edit]

Should we add a box for sports related information. --South Philly 04:08, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that would be too much, we have four selected article sections here already. Sports can be featured in any of the existing categories, I would even count it as part of culture. Medvedenko 20:16, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Selected anniversaries

[edit]

I have added a selected anniversaries section to this page. I'm keeping it hidden until the New Year, because I'm replacing the Music Arts & Culture section with it. This frees up a lot more articles to be selected between the Selected biography and Selected article sections. There are just not enough non stub culture articles to make that section worthwhile. Selected anniversaries can include any type of Philadelphia related topic, no matter the quality of the article. Medvedenko 04:03, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a link to the Music, Arts & Culture archive for prosperity. Portal:Philadelphia/Music, Arts & Culture archive/2006.

  • I like the idea of the music and culture. I would say we should keep it to highlight music and the performing arts. I'll write more when I have more time. --evrik (talk) 21:43, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images tagged for deletion

[edit]

The following images have been tagged for deletion, at first on grounds that their descriptions do not show their source URLs. Five or more of these are in Philadelphia and illustrate articles about their sites. At least one has been a Philadelphia portal DYK or other featured photo.

  1. Image:JohnColtraneHouse.png
  2. Image:MtPleasantFairmountPk.jpg
  3. Image:PhilaSchoolofDesign.jpg
  4. Image:RaceStMeetinghouse.jpg
  5. Image:USSBecuna.jpg
  6. Image:Cliveden-mansion.png
  7. Image:Stenton-mansion.png
  8. Image:St-James-the-Less-Church.png
  9. Image:PennaAcademyofFineArts.png
 10. Image:Woodford-mansion.png
 11. Image:Wyck.png

The first 5 are probably copied from National Historic Landmark program webpages of the National Park Service (NPS), and if locations are provided then there is a further issue that they are probably in violation of copyright. Not all images on NPS webpages are public domain. These images were tagged as being taken by a NPS employee but that is not documented. The NPS also uses photos taken by others, and those are not public domain. The uploader has been notified. If others wish to address these problems by providing URLs, please do. Otherwise they will be deleted. Personally, I feel conflicted about proceeding with this, as I have also worked on articles about Philadelphia area sites, such as List of National Historic Landmarks in Philadelphia and it is my wish for such articles to be well illustrated, but this is where i am at in discussion with the uploader on his talk page. No hard feelings intended. (similar notice posted elsewhere, too) doncram (talk) 00:51, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, OK, I added sources.--BillFlis (talk) 14:10, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notice from the Portals WikiProject

[edit]

WikiProject Portals is back!

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.

As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.

There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.

And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.

From your friendly neighborhood Portals WikiProject. Hope to see you there. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   07:41, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
