Moribund portal

[edit]

The content in this portal seems to have stopped being updated in 2007, for the most part. i just updated some of it (my first effort at editing a portal). if anyone else wants to contribute, thats great. we are definitely not ready to bring back "voting" for any of the content, if its only 1 or 2 people editing here.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 01:22, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Revamp

[edit]

Well, not really, but i did replace some content. I did create categories for EACH editable page that the portal links to, found at Category:San Francisco Bay Area portal. This makes it easier to navigate. Ive added some guidelines to how to add articles. I think that quarterly rotation where appropriate is about right. at least as long as i am the only editor.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 09:11, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I plan to revise the rotating content in early 2013, assuming the world doesnt end this month:)Mercurywoodrose (talk) 07:31, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dates for last major changes:

Do you know, Sept 28, 2012: change in january. possibilities from more recent articles: (this is hard to collect, i will try to use the new article tool at the project page): checked oct 5 to nov 1, found these: A Thousand Lives: The Untold Story of Jonestown, Carneros Creek (Napa River), Cordilleras Creek, Arizmendi Bakery, Downtown Oakland Historic District, Forts Baker, Barry, and Cronkhite, List of Crystal Dynamics video games (may be FA soon)

Cities panel 2: oct 1, 2012. change entirely in january, or just add some CDP's as list is nearly complete. not sure yet. (see below)

quote: sept 28, 2012. change in january. possibilities: [[]], [[]], [[]]

selected article: sept 30, 2012. change in january. possibilities: White Night riots, Phoenix (fireboat), Leo Ryan

selected picture: sept 28, 2012. change in january. possibilities: File:San Francisco in ruin edit2.jpg, File:Mission Santa Clara.jpg, File:Devastation in San Bruno.jpg

topics column 2: oct 1, 2o12. change in january. this can rotate entirely, but thats a lot of work. possibilities: [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]]

I have decided to keep all previously added topics. column 1 is featured articles, which should increase slowly over time. column 2 is for C grade and up, of Mid importance and up, and i will not remove old articles for now, but simply add new ones as i see fit, to at least keep it on par with the FA column. other portals have complete lists of A, B, and GA articles, so i dont see a reason to keep these columns at any particular length.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 21:44, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

so see y'all in january some time.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 07:45, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

decided to just start adding C grade and higher city articles to the section, and not swap any out, or add CDP's (yet). it will just get longer. i can shorten the taglines if i need to.

Bold items were added this cycle, so others may still be used in April 2013.

2013 new articles

[edit]

for consideration in about 3 months (april 2013)

Hey, if i keep up a list like this, we could return to multiple DYK's here. Which i just did for April 2013, as there a few of very high quality.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 05:20, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

We should just cycle through Category:FM-Class San Francisco Bay Area articles first. thats a few years.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 05:49, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

heres a great image worth featuring, probably could be a featured image officually: File:Palace of Fine Arts and the Lagoon.JPGMercurywoodrose (talk) 06:15, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Featured april 2013. so i broke my own rule.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 06:11, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The Portal:California uses a randomizer function for selected articles, images, etc. While our backlog of selected articles is poor, we could easily set the randomizer to choose from among the Featured Media. I may try to parse this and do it. I think it means adding ALL the FM to the "archives" page for images, lots of work formatting, etc.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 16:47, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Current list of FM

[edit]

if we consider the files of similar types (3 of the bridge, 4 of the earthquake) as "1 for each general type" (ie use each one 1/3 or 1/4 as often), we then have 11 images to rotate through, with 5 not used yet: not enough. so, we need to collect a list of other images to add eventually to cycle through.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 01:43, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Biography

[edit]

Added selected biography.99.101.139.189 (talk) 20:23, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Which logically means that the selected article will not be a biography.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 16:44, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Lots of GA ranked articles to choose from that are sfba related.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 08:39, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New article nominations

[edit]

New articles, from late march through june 2013. I may add 2, 3, or 4 DYK's if we have enough. 5 bold articles were added july 2013.

Quotes

The Wikiquote link leads to the collection of SF quotes: there is no SFBA page. Here are some other pages which have SFBA related quotes:

July 2013

[edit]

I replaced the quote, new articles, selected image, selected bio. another contributor replaced the selected article, right on my schedule, which is nice but not necessary, as i dont own the format here. thanks for the good work, and please, anyone can add their own timeline for changing articles to this portal, add randomization, choose their own articles if they are at least close in spirit to other portal guidelines. I am no expert, i just dont want this to be a moribund portal.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 08:38, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A city on hills has it over flat-land places. . . . This gold and white acropolis rising wave on wave against the blue of the Pacific sky was a stunning thing, a painted thing, like a picture of a mediaeval Italian city which can never have existed. John Steinbeck, in Travels With Charley (1962)

If i dont switch to random images prior to then, heres a good one to add:

Random!

[edit]

I figured out the random function. all archives are now a list of the full set of selections. no more updating any section EXCEPT DYK. I do NOT want to rotate through DYKs, as long as i can find 1-4 new articles every few months to feature here.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 03:49, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Panoramas

[edit]

we ahve about 4 fm panoramas, and more at the commons, to add a new section. Ive added the new panel, and highlighted have been added to the archive:

DYK's for next batch

[edit]

I may do dyk's whenever i have at least 2. I have shortened the taglines to fit convention. I dont want to rotate dyk's, that seems weird, to see old selections of new articles. I have instead added an "previous DYK" section, and given each batch, by month, their own page. the current dyk's will be given the next page in that series, and the main page will have new dyk's, either when we get 3, or if its been 3 months, whichever comes first. i found the DYK's used at the cali portal that are sfba related, added them to the listMercurywoodrose (talk) 03:52, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have revamped this moribund portal extensively. I think its ready for featured portal status, but i do want to get feedback first, as i am currently the ONLY editor working on it. i plan to update the DYK on a regular basis, and am maintaining the associated wikiproject, the Wikipedia:WikiProject California/San Francisco Bay Area task force mostly on my own, checking for new articles. Mercurywoodrose (talk) 08:33, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On my fairly new Lenovo laptop with a 1600×900 pixel screen, the portal loads wider than my screen, requiring me to scroll right to see all of it. Perhaps there is a way to resize the portal. Binksternet (talk) 15:00, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Its the Panoramic image size. I shrunk them down to 1000px. that may be more than your computer will handle. if its still too large for most, i may shrink it down more. however, the California portal has 800px images, and thats featured. thanks for the feedback. i love big images, but ease of use is important.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:42, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

portal ukraine has a selected painting, some portals put a banner at the top. Portal:Texas has a spotlight city. portal bangladesh has a cityMercurywoodrose (talk) 17:11, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just added a selected historical image (for paintings, old photos, old drawings), and a selected city. they currently have only 1 image to choose from, so random doesnt do anything yet. i will transfer all the historic images from selected images, and add more cities. the separate page on cities will simply list all start class or higher cities in alphabetical order. i may or may not leave the big 3 at the top.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 17:11, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

Collection is unfortunately inevitably biased towards San Francisco. i tried to find other photos, but there are so many great SF shots, i couldnt help add them. I went through the entire commons category tree, skipping only a few sections, such as the endless historic building images, many of which are ordinary. please add more of the other regions if you find them. they dont have to be perfect, just show a unique feature of the area.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 16:38, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

New features

[edit]

Bay area by year. I will add years chronologically in reverse order. i am back to 1984 now. I am sure i can find at least one item for each year going back to 1848.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 03:32, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done. every year from 1846 to present. room for more items in many earlier years.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:08, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

another new feature: bay area events (ie periodic events). added the biggest or most interesting. articles are uniformly horrible, but the events are a highly notable aspect of the region.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 07:26, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done. added all the significant events.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:08, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Status report

[edit]
  • All FA, GA, and many B articles are now listed, of high or top importance to the SFBA task force, and also many of mid importance.
  • Selected articles: 101
  • Selected biographies: 58
  • Selected cities: 29
  • Selected images: 198
  • Recently in the Bay Area: up to date as of July 2014. as new ones are added, older ones can drop off and be added to the 2014 page, which is already in the random selection, showing all the older items (2 at this point)
  • The Bay Area by year: every year from 1846 to early 2014 (170 years) has at least 2 listings, almost all with at least 3. 1 page showing events prior to 1846. each item is an article or article subsection, no "news" reports a la wikinews, which i don't like putting here. this is a WP/Commons portal.
  • Selected historical images: 177
  • Did you know: current listing was posted this month, scheduled items available for next month
  • Previous did you knows: 35 sets, all the DYK's that have appeared on the main page, or the California DYK, or here, that i could find, grouped by month or so that they first appeared.
  • Selected periodic events: 40
  • Quotes: 33
  • Selected panoramas: 49
  • There are probably a few more B class articles to include, and lots more pictures are possible (i think i may have hit a max: 200 is a lot of random images to cycle through).
  • Regions box has a good sampling of all the major areas in the Bay area.
  • The intro article is updated fairly often
  • The subpage on cities is a sortable list copied from a list article. It can easily be updated as new census data is published.
  • The subpage on quality content was manually created from the California quality content page, as i have not figured out if a task force can have such a list automatically generated.
  • TO DO: place the portal tag on all the articles referenced at this portal. I have not been consistent with this. There are lots more to tag.

weird. i may have different inclusion criteria, but if not, there seems to be fewer newsworthy events in the Bay Area since May. i didnt include the various free speech stuff, cause they seemed like nothing burgers. nothing actually happened here of any import. you can add them if you like, but it will sound a little...pathetic.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 03:11, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Notice from the Portals WikiProject

[edit]

WikiProject Portals is back!

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.

As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.

There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.

And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.

From your friendly neighborhood Portals WikiProject. Hope to see you there. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   07:44, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Expensive function calls

[edit]

This portal is not rendering properly, because it has too many expensive Lua function calls. This is not a software bug but requires that we simplify the portal. Please can someone who knows the topic suggest which parts could be trimmed down without significant loss? Thanks, Certes (talk) 16:41, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Two quick comments:

  1. On my monitor and with my eyes, the blue on brown heading: "CITIES AND TOWNS IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA" is unreadable. You may want to adjust the color scheme to make the heading more accessible. (Also, making this heading sentence case may make it more readable.)
  2. Same issue with color scheme on the recognized content tab
  3. I'd guess that the land area numbers are square miles and square kilometers. You may want to consider adding specific headers.

76.14.122.5 (talk) 22:24, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the comments. I've edited the portal and hope this improves the headings. Certes (talk) 22:57, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks much better. Thank you. 76.14.122.5 (talk) 22:59, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

have to say i still cant believe i got so into doing work on this portal. glad its not all been deleted. i tell everyone to try editing WP. its a blast if you get into it. thanks for the memories. i havent returned to editing, but still might. a new home computer would help. Mercurywoodrose (talk) 00:25, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your contributions, Mercurywoodrose. It's very helpful for someone who knows the topic to visit a portal occasionally and replace any outdated items with fresh content. I check and occasionally update portals myself but more on a technical level as I'm not a subject expert. Wikipedia hasn't changed much in the last three years and you'd be very welcome to rejoin us.
