The presidential standard of Northern Cyprus is the official flag used to represent the President of Northern Cyprus. It is a distinctive emblem that symbolizes the authority and presence of the President within the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).[1]

Design and symbolism[edit]

The Presidential Standard of Northern Cyprus is defined by the "Official Flag Law of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus." According to Article 9 of this law, the standard is designed with the following details:

  • Main body: The standard features a white background adorned with a red star and crescent, both iconic symbols of Turkish identity. Additionally, there are two vertical red stripes running along the length of the flag.
  • Golden Stars: Positioned in the top-left corner of the flag, there are two nested golden stars. These stars are separated by a white background.
  • Gilt Frame: While three edges of the flag are adorned with gilt frames, the fly edge remains unframed.

Legal status[edit]

The legal basis for the Presidential Standard of Northern Cyprus is established in the "Flag Law of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus." This law, adopted by the Founding Assembly of the TRNC on March 7, 1984, delineates the specifications and usage protocols for the standard.

According to Article 74 of the TRNC Constitution, the Presidential Standard is officially proclaimed and published in the Official Gazette by the President of Northern Cyprus.[3]

Usage[edit]

The Presidential Standard holds significant ceremonial and official importance within Northern Cyprus. It is hoisted on the flagpole at the President's residence and remains raised throughout official visits, both day and night. Additionally, the standard is prominently displayed in the President's office, usually positioned behind their working desk.[3]

During transportation, the Presidential Standard is affixed to the left rear side of the President's vehicle, with the flagpole featuring a chromium-plated top bearing a crescent and star emblem.[4]

Historical significance[edit]

The creation and adoption of the Presidential Standard of Northern Cyprus reflect the enduring commitment to national identity and sovereignty within the TRNC.[5] The standard serves as a visual representation of the President's authority and the nation's values.[6]
