Reliance Broadcasting Unlimited (RBU) is a Filipino media and telecommunications firm in the Philippines.[1] An affiliate of telecommunications company Converge ICT, RBU used to be owned an FM station (DWDU) in Clark, Pampanga, and a regional/community channel in Central Luzon (PEP TV).

History

[edit]

Congressional franchise

[edit]

On July 29, 2012, the Congressional franchise of RBU was enacted into law as Republic Act 10178.[citation needed]

Republic Act 10178 grants RBU a franchise to construct, install, establish, operate and maintain for commercial purposes and in the public interest, radio and/ or television broadcasting stations in the Philippines, where frequencies and/or channels are still available for radio and/or television broadcasting, including digital radio and television system, through microwave, satellite or whatever means, including the use of any new technology that may hereafter or in the future developed in the field of radio and television broadcasting, with the corresponding technological auxiliaries and facilities, special broadcast and other program and distribution services and relay stations for 25 years.[1]

Early years

[edit]

RBU began its operations in 2015 when the ownership of FM station DWDU (UFM 105.5) in Clark, Pampanga was transferred from its previous owner Information Broadcast Unlimited.[2][3] It also took over the operations of the regional/community cable channel PEP TV from ACCTN.

Both PEP TV and UFM 105.5 were shutdown in 2024.[4]

Venturing into satellite TV service

[edit]

In July 2024, RBU began entering its new business venture after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has given RBU to operate a direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV service. RBU has signed a partnership with South Korea-based telecommunications service provider KT SAT to operate DTH satellite services via Koreasat 7 transponder satellite.[5][6] It is yet to announce the launch its own satellite TV service.
