The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santiago del Estero (Latin: Dioecesis Sancti Iacobi de Estero) is in Argentina and is a suffragan diocese of Tucumán.
History
[edit]On 10 April 1961 Pope John XXIII founded the Diocese of Santiago del Estero from territory taken from the Diocese of Tucumán. It lost territory to the Diocese of Añatuya when that diocese was created in 1961.[1][2]
On 22 July 2024, Pope Francis elevated the diocese to an archdiocese[3] as he transferred the title of "Primate of Argentina" from the archbishop of Buenos Aires to the archbishop of Santiago del Estero.
