History[edit]

Russian invasion of Ukraine[edit]

In the third year of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, on 24 March 2024, Yamal and her sister ship Azov were hit by Ukrainian cruise missiles while they were in their home port of Sevastopol, according to the Ukrainian general staff and open-source intelligence sources.[1][2] Eyewitnesses reported explosions during the night.[3] Satellite images later showed that Azov, Yamal and Ivan Khurs had not been sunk.[4][better source needed][5] Ukrainian sources claimed that Yamal had been critically damaged in the attack.[6][7]
