Sophie Louise Scott, known professionally as Sophie and the Giants abbreviated as SATG, [1][2] is an English singer-songwriter from Staines-upon-Thames[3].

History

Formation and early years (2015–2018)

Sophie began performing under her artist name Sophie and the Giants in 2015 : at first, the only goal of her project was just to practise music with the help of amateur musician friends,[2] but in the spring of 2017[4] Sophie decided to involve drummer Chris Hill, bassist Bailey Stapledon and guitarist Toby Holmes, who were three fellow students at a music college in Guildford at the time,[5][6] to "take this more seriously and be like a proper band".[2]

Sophie later moved to Sheffield with her band, and in April 2018 saw the release of her first single, Monsters, followed by the Adolescence EP in October, which included the songs Bulldog, Space Girl and Waste My Air.[7]

Success (2019–present)

SATG started 2019 by playing for BBC Radio Sheffield on 12 January;[8] on 15 March, she released her new single The Light,[4] which was chosen by Codemasters for the trailer of the then-forthcoming racing game Grid.[9] The song was also used by Vodafone for advertising in Germany.[10]

In early June, Antonia Pooles replaced Stapledon.[4] Later that summer, SATG played at the Reading and Leeds Festivals[11] and at Glastonbury Festival.[12][13] A new single, Break the Silence, was released in August,[4] followed by Runaway in November,[14] and in December SATG played again for BBC Radio Sheffield, this time live from Maida Vale Studios.[15]

In early 2020, Sophie worked with German DJ Purple Disco Machine on the song Hypnotized, which was released on 8 April,[16] and the sound of which was heavily inspired by the italo disco music genre.[17] Hypnotized was very successful across Europe where it was awarded five platinum records in Italy[18] and a diamond record in France;[19] it was followed by the new single Right Now, released in February 2021.[20]

On the 12th of November 2021, Sophie collaborated with Benny Benassi and Dardust to release the single Golden Nights[21], which further solidified her presence in the dance music scene. In January 2022, Sophie reunited with Purple Disco Machine to release the track In The Dark on the 21st[22], which has since reached platinum status in five countries, including France[23] and Italy[24].

Throughout 2022, Sophie continued her journey in the dance music genre and completed an EU tour with a new live setup that consisted of her and a DJ. In the same year she released We Own The Night on August 19th[25].

In 2023, Sophie started the year off by releasing her dance song DNA featuring MEARSY on 10th of March[26] which earned itself a Gold Record[27], and Paradise featuring Purple Disco Machine on the 16th of June[28]

In 2024, Sophie released of her new single Shut Up and Dance on May 17 2024[29], which quickly climbed the German radio charts, reaching number 2. On August 23, 2024, Sophie teamed up with multi-platinum dance act R3hab to release their single All Night[30], which features an interpolation of the boy band Blue's hit All Rise[31].
