Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot (also simply known as Possum Trot) is a 2024 American drama film directed by Joshua Weigel, and co-written by Rebekah Weigel. Actress and activist Letitia Wright serves as executive producer. The film was produced by Peachtree Productions and DailyWire+ for Angel Studios.

Plot[edit]

Inspired by a true story, the film follows Donna and Reverend Martin of Possum Trot, Texas as they ignite a fire in the hearts of their rural church to embrace kids in foster care that no one else would take in. By doing the impossible – adopting 77 children – this East Texas community proved that with determined love, the battle for America's most vulnerable can be won.

Filming took place in Macon, Georgia in the fall of 2022, with a budget of $8.5 million.[5] In February 2024, it was announced that Angel Studios acquired North American distribution rights to the film.[6] In June 2024, conservative media company The Daily Wire, co-founded by podcaster and author Ben Shapiro, announced they had partnered with Angel on bringing the film to theaters under their DailyWire+ brand.

Letitia Wright would later write that she had no control over the Daily Wire’s involvement in distributing the film, stating “To be clear, after we completed the production of this film, Angel Studios were brought on board to handle its distribution and they later partnered with The Daily Wire. That was not my decision, and I was not given an update or made aware of this decision. I am in no way aligned or affiliated with The Daily Wire. I am thankful for all who want to positively champion this film and campaign to serve children. However, I do not condone using this beautiful film for divisive political purposes. That is not why I joined the project.” [7]

Box office[edit]

In the United States and Canada, Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot was released alongside Despicable Me 4 and is projected to gross $4-6 million from 2,250 theaters in its opening weekend.[8] The film made $3.1 million on its first day and $1 million on its second.[9]

Critical response[edit]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 79% of 34 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.1/10.[10] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film a rare average grade of "A+" on an A+ to F scale, while those polled by PostTrak gave the film a 94% positive score, with 87% saying they would definitely recommend it.[9]
