As an Assistant District Attorney in New York County, North began his legal career. The 1968 Columbia University Students for a Democratic Society protests were prosecuted by him. North led the D. A.'s Homicide Bureau investigation into the March 6, 1970 Greenwich Village townhouse explosion caused by Weather Underground (Weatherman) bomb-making in the basement. Other notables escaped but were apprehended after the blast killed three Weathermen.[5]

North became a Bureau Chief as a Special Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Attorney General of the State of New York, pursuing criminal justice corruption cases involving judges, lawyers, and police personnel. After defending physicians in medical malpractice cases, he became an associate. He joined various plaintiff firms as a partner. In 1986, North founded a legal office in an upper East Side townhouse in Manhattan. He shuttered it during the COVID-19 epidemic in 2021 and became “of counsel” to Merson.[6]

North focused his private litigation practice on medical malpractice victims who sustained devastating injuries. He tried several cases and set New York State and national records for top verdicts year after year. "Medical Malpractice Lawyer of the Year"; member of the New York Law Journal's "Medical Malpractice Hall of Fame"; member of the “Who's Who” of top tort lawyers; and one of New York City's top 100 lawyers. North is a referee for the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct, a mediator for the US Southern District Court, a member of the Practicing Law Institute's Advisory Board on Tort Litigation, and a member of the Governor's Judicial Screening Committee.[6]

He chaired many continuing legal education programs, including Managing the Multimillion Dollar Case, Trial Mechanics and Discovery, Deposition Skills, Damages Update, Workshop on Direct and Cross Examination, Medical Malpractice Case Management, and Objectifying Brain Damage.[5]
