Plot

[edit]

Nishigandha, known as the Suhagan Chudail, is a witch who has killed 15 of her husbands over a period of 208 years to get her 15 shringaar. By collecting all 16 shringaar, she will be immortal, as well as the most powerful witch. She sets her eyes on Moksh, who will help her get her 16th shringaar, Sindoor. Moksh belongs to a royal family and is in love with his childhood friend, Deeya. Nishigandha uses her evil powers to control Moksh, who announces his marriage with Nishigandha, breaking Deeya's heart.

Deeya eventually finds out about Nishigandha being a witch, but her father is killed in the process. Deeya decides to be Moksh's protector. On the day of the wedding, Deeya is successful in marrying Moksh, but he also ends up marrying Nishigandha. Nishigandha is unsuccessful in getting her 16th shringaar because she is sharing her husband with Deeya.

Soon, Deeya is able to bring Moksh out of Nishigandha's possession, and with his help, they kill Nishigandha. However, Yogini Kapila had tied Deeya and Nishigandha's soul together, so Deeya ends up dying as well after killing Nishigandha. Nishigandha and Deeya's souls meet after death and Deeya asks Nishigandha to seek salvation this time. However, Nishigandha is adamant and refuses to seek salvation. After touching Nishigandha, Deeya is transported back 208 years in the past to understand why Nishigandha won't move on.

208 years ago, Nishigandha was an innocent village girl who was in love with Shantanu, a man that sold bangles, who also loved her back. They were both planning to marry. Meanwhile, Deeya turns out to be the reincarnation of Shalakha, princess of Songarh. Shalakha was obsessed with Shantanu and in order to get him, she hatched a plan to eliminate Nishigandha by getting her married to her brother, the King of Songarh. However, the King tries to rape Nishigandha to make her his. But Nishigandha fights him off and in self defense, he gets killed. Shalakha spreads the rumor that Nishigandha has evil powers and used it to kill the King. Due to being accused of witchery, Nishigandha is burnt alive. Meanwhile, depressed by the news of Nishigandha's death, Shantanu commits suicide and curses Shalakha to be separated from her lover in every birth just like she separated him and Nishigandha. Nishigandha turns into Suhagan Chudail due to the injustice that happened to her.

Back in the present, Moksh revives Nishigandha so Deeya can be alive again. Deeya, who is alive again, feels guilty for what happened with Nishigandha. She sets out with Moksh to find out if Shantanu's soul is still trapped in the earthly realms, as she wants to reunite Nishigandha and Shantanu. It is revealed that Moksh was born dead, but his father, Omesh, made a deal with Mahasur, and Mahasur revived Moksh. Mahasur made Omesh vow that in exchange of Moksh's life, Moksh will have to marry a witch.

On the other hand, Moksh is revealed to have Shantanu's soul that had been caged by Mahasur for many years, a part of Mahasur's bigger plan that is yet to be revealed. Mahasur had trapped Shantanu's soul for many years to manipulate Nishigandha into becoming a witch.

Casting

[edit]
Sharma makes her return to television after four years.

Nia Sharma was cast to play the witch, Nishigandha. It marks her return to fiction after four years.[4][5] On her role as witch, Sharma stated,

"Playing this Chudail was challenging for me, and I felt like a rookie. I had to rely heavily on the director's guidance, and it took me some time to fully immerse myself into Nishigandha's character.[6][7]"

Bengali actress, Debchandrima Singha Roy was cast as Deeya, in her Hindi television debut.[8] Zayn Ibad Khan was cast as Moksh, opposite Sharma and Roy.[9] Aradhana Sharma was cast to play Rachna, Moksh's sister.[10] In June 2024, Apara Mehta was cast to play a yogini, Deeya's helper.[11]

Filming

[edit]

The series is based in Rajasthan, and has been shot at various locations in Rajasthan including Bikaner. The series is also shot at the Film City, Mumbai.[12]

Reception

[edit]

Prachi Arya of India Today stated, "Nia, who has aced her role as ‘Naagin’ in the supernatural series before, looks familiar in the new show as she uses her powers to sacrifice men for immortality. The poor VFX and cringe dialogues make one lose interest in the beginning. Debchandrima looks fresh on screen. The concept is similar to Indian television shows that have experimented with the genre before."[13]
