U.S.patent 6013494 can be used as the reference for synthesis by E.coli. Dupont has built a factory in France, perhaps with Tate & Lyle, to synthesize nylon using propanediol as a precursor. This page, http://plastics.dupont.com/plastics/pdflit/europe/design/ed0703e.pdf, states that DuPont is using it to produce the "DuPont sorona" fiber product.
