Name[edit]

Looked through all of the pages under 'Ariete', but in none of them does it actually say what Ariete means - any explanation? FOARP (talk) 14:36, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Italian military capabilities[edit]

Italy surrended in september 1943, after over three years of war, this proves the Italian Armed Forces had fighting capabilties notwithstanding defeats. I want to name some good performances by Italian ground forces in North Africa:

-the hard defence of Giarabub (behind the British lines) during Operation Compass. -the fierce counterattacks of the Blackshirts and Special Armoured Brigade that nearly steamrolled three Australian battalions in the battles for Bardia, Tobruk and Derna during Operation Compass 1941. -the reconquest at bayonet point of lost positions outside Tobruk by the 17th "Pavia" Division during November 1941. -the Easter battle on 1 May 1941 when the 8th Bersaglieri Regiment finally breached the Australian defences with the help of the Italian 32nd Combat Sappers Battalion and "Ariete" Armoured Division (50 Australians captured). -the stubborn role of the "Ariete" Armoured Division covering the German rearguard at Gazala May/June 1942. -"Folgore" Parachute and "Ariete" Armoured Divisions covering the German retreat at Alamein. -the standing against all odds of the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Italian 1st "Giovani Fascisti" Regiment during Operation Crusader (November/December 1941). -the hard defence of the Mareth line and Takrouna (Tunisia) in 1943

Too Positive[edit]

I agree. An example of this are the claimed 5,000 POW taken. The total MIA for the Commonwealth were 7,500 (Playfair), and most of these would have been Sout African from 5th SA Brigade. There is simply no way that Ariete and the Italian units took 2/3rds of the total MIA as POW. Orphaned references in 132nd Armoured Division Ariete[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of 132nd Armoured Division Ariete's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
