Redlinked names[edit]

Some personal names, such as Thomas Davy, have been redlinked in this article without qualification; e.g., [[Thomas Davy]] rather than, say, [[Thomas Davy (Australian politician)]]. This is a bad idea; I simply quote from WP:REDNOT: "Redlinks to personal names should be avoided ... Frequently a redlinked name has been placed in an article, and subsequently a different editor has created an article about an entirely different person with the same or a similar name....". Consequently, unless there is a consensus that these bare names should be redlinked, either the links should be qualified in a more restrictive way, or the names should be unlinked, unless the relevant article is created. This is only a (rather odd interpretation of a ) recommendation within a guideline - it is not policy and does not apply to every situation. If this was followed literally, every time a new biography about a dead politician was created, the creator would have to hunt Wikipedia through its not terribly reliable search to pin down all the places it was, but is no longer, linked and relink them (probably not finding even half of them and leaving a bunch of articles with people wondering "who is that guy who's been so casually referred to without a link?" - a futile exercise if ever there was one. A generally abiding principle of Wikipedia (which *is* policy, btw) is WP:BURO, which emphasises not engaging in bureaucracy purely for the sake of it, and WP:IAR (also policy), which emphasises that improving the encyclopaedia is and should be the #1 priority of all editors. Actually we dont disambiguate unless there is an actual need to disambiguate, while the names are a red link as is then adding a qualifier isnt appropriate. For the actual policies Wikipedia:Article titles Article titles are based on what reliable English-language sources refer to the article's subject by additionally WP:PRECISE we dont disambiguate by using (Australian Politician) when (politician) is sufficient.
