What is notable?[edit]

  • December 20 - Lieutenant-Colonel Zvi Ofer, former Military Governor of Nablus killed in action West of Jericho.[1] is deleted as not notable enough for this list but in 1975 in Israel we find:

November 25 – Israeli Air Force C-130H 203/4X-FBO, c/n 4533, crashes into mount Jebel Halal, 55 kilometers south-southeast of El Arish, in the Israeli-administered Sinai Peninsula. Pilots were Shaul Bustan and Uri Manor.[2]

So why is all the below in 1957 in Israel and not Lieut-Col Ofer in this article? (none with references)
  • February 18 – Two Israeli civilians are killed in the kibbutz Nir Yitzhak by landmines set by Palestinian Arab militants who infiltrated into Israel from the Gaza Strip.
  • March 8 - Armed Palestinian Arab militants, who infiltrated into Israel, kill a shepherd from kibbutz Beit Guvrin in a field near the kibbutz.
  • April 16 - Armed Palestinian Arab militants, who infiltrated into Israel, killed two guards at Kibbutz Mesilot.
  • May 20 - Armed Palestinian Arab militant opened fire on a truck in the Arava region, killing a worker.
  • May 29 - A tractor driver was killed and two others wounded, when the vehicle struck a landmine, next to kibbutz Kissufim.
  • June 23 - Israelis were wounded by landmines, close to the Gaza Strip.
  • August 23 - Two guards of the Israeli Mekorot water company were killed near Kibbutz Beit Govrin.
  • December 21 - A member of kibbutz Gadot was killed in the Kibbutz fields.Padres Hana (talk) 10:21, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is a big difference between a soldier killed in battle (At that time many soldiers were killed in battles) and civilians killed in terror attacks (Each terrorist attack against civilians at that time shocked the entire Israeli public and received a wide media coverage in Israeli newspapers). I agree that all these articles need to be well sourced - I would definitely do so in the near future.

Are there any other people, except Pardes Hanna, who think that the Zvi Ofer incident (for which I could not find any relaible sources) was prominent enough to be included in this article? TheCuriousGnome (talk) 11:40, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ofer Prison was named after Zvi Ofer (Also known as "Tzvika Ofer" or "Zvika Ofer"), the commander of the Haruv Reconnaissance Unit, and holder of the Israeli medal of valor for the 1955 Nuqeib operation in Syria. He was the military commander of Nablus in 1967. I think the death of a notable and high ranking officer can be considered a notable event. As a recipient of a significant award, is notable enough for his own article, as well as for a mention in other articles. For more information about Zvi Ofer see also Israeli elite units since 1948 By Sam Katz, Samuel M. Katz, Ron Volstad p.24 for his involvement in 1962 Operation Snunit. See also the article "Only a Burst of Gunfire in the Chest: Zvika Ofer, By Amos Carmel", published in the book "Lionhearts: Heroes of Israel". Marokwitz (talk) 12:22, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
