Should mention how visible earthquake damage remained in the city for many years afterwards, and how dissatisfaction with the government response to the earthquake was kind of the opening wedge of what eventually led to the downfall of Somoza... AnonMoos (talk) 02:30, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Money money money

[edit]

This site says damage was US$1 billion; this puts it over 40% of GNP. Is there a reliable number? TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 03:42, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This article in ASTIN Bulletin, Vol 9, No. 3, by the Central American Actuarial Association, mentions US$ 845 million in earthquake damages. Interestingly, the GDP of Nicaragua in 1972 was US$ 878 million at current market prices, according to World Bank estimates. See GDP at market prices. This would imply earthquake damage amounted to 96% (sic) of GDP. I guess some more searching is needed here - Arjuno (talk 22:46, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A copyvio tag was placed in the article by Trekphiler, indicating a possible copyright infringement of this USGS article. However, if I remember correctly, all publications of USGS are in the public domain (See also: USGS). Is there any reason we should consider this specific USGS article an exception? - Arjuno (talk 01:37, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there is, and am hereby clearing the investigation. The attribution template has been added to the References section. MLauba (talk) 10:50, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
