The following is an IRC log of the discussion on the naming of the article. All of the participants agreed to having their names here. There was a unilinky bot, which automatically linked everything in wiki-links; I removed them. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:14, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Log[edit]

<Hurricanehink>	Oh, quick little thing. 1975 Transcolorado hurricane - I know the title is weird, but Jdorje nor I
could think of a better one. Any comments on that?
<dorje>	sif
<Hurricanehink>	Secret internet family?
<Roadgeek_Adam>	1975 Pacific Northwest hurricane?
<dorje>	northeast?
<Plasticup>	Open-ocean-fish-storm #2543
<Hurricanehink>	No, I see what Mitch is saying
<dorje>	oh "Pacific northwest"
<Hurricanehink>	It affected the Pacific Northwest
<dorje>	well I suggested British colombia hurricane
<Hurricanehink>	I sort of like that, actually
<dorje>	did it?
<Plasticup>	Transcolorado sounds cooler
<dorje>	yeah cuz not very often do hurricanes cross colorado
<Hurricanehink>	Well, close enough. Transcolorado is a very weird name
<Roadgeek_Adam>	Transcolorado makes no sense
<Plasticup>	better than 1975 Trans-colorado hurricane!
<dorje>	lol
<dorje>	redirect!
<Hurricanehink>	1975 Pacific Northwest hurricane..... I like it because it isn't as specific as British Colombia hurricane
(as it didn't affect BC much)
<dorje>	ok
<Roadgeek_Adam>	that or 1975 Rocky Mountain hurricane
<Plasticup>	Pacific Northwest is a US-centric term
<Plasticup>	US/Canada-centric
<dorje>	if there's a land mass we can possibly link it to, that'd be best
<Plasticup>	but it never actually reached to coast
<Hurricanehink>	The name should be US/Canada-centric, since that's where it affected
<Roadgeek_Adam>	Why not Rocky Mountain - I thought they went into Canada
<dorje>	that would be even more confusing than transcolorado
<Hurricanehink>	http://www.weather.unisys.com/hurricane/e_pacific/1975/12/track.gif - it dissipated just offshore, albeit
much closer to Alaska and Yukon
<Hurricanehink>	(most people think SW British Colombia when you say just British Colombia)
<Plasticup>	Vancouver
<dorje>	1975 Yukon Territory storm?
<Hurricanehink>	I don't want to call it 1975 Alaska hurricane, since it didn't move ashore
<Hurricanehink>	And it didn't make it to Yukon territory
<dorje>	"the remnants quickly reached the coast of British Columbia"
<dorje>	that's where I got my name from :p
<Plasticup>	not a lot of landmarks in the open ocean
<Hurricanehink>	Pacific Northwest - this looks right
<dorje>	though the remnants of storms hit lots of places, including iceland and great britain; that's not a very good
criteria for naming
<dorje>	but then, the ship precedent ain't so great either
<Hurricanehink>	Pacific Northwest refers to the overall region, and the storm was in the vicinity of the overall region
<Plasticup>	did it reach the Gulf of Alaska?
<Hurricanehink>	I was just looking at that, and it didn't quite make it there
<Plasticup>	shucks
<dorje>	i thought pacific northwest was a US-centric term
<Plasticup>	it reached about 54 degrees north?
<dorje>	i.e. the northwest of the US
<Plasticup>	this shows the Gulf of Alaska around 54 degrees north: http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/np/images/maps/GulfOfAlaska.jpg
<Plasticup>	to 1975 Gulf of Alaska hurricane might be accurate
<Hurricanehink>	It dissipated at 54 degrees north
<dorje>	sketchy
<Hurricanehink>	And hardly spent any time in the body of water
<dorje>	http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:1975_Pacific_hurricane_12_track.png
<Hurricanehink>	Whereas, Pacific Northwest is a much broader area, and I feel closer to where the storm was
<dorje>	yeah, it was at hurricane strength well south of there
|<--	jdorje has left irc.freenode.net (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
<Plasticup>	it never reached the pacific northwest though
<dorje>	okay no objection to the pacific northwest
<Hurricanehink>	But that's the broad, general region which it was near
<dorje>	more general than british columbia and it was offshort from there
<dorje>	much like the 2006 Nova Scotia tropical storm or whatever it was
<Plasticup>	well okay
<Plasticup>	you should post this log so there is a record of the discussion
<Hurricanehink>	Alright
<Hurricanehink>	All opposed to 1975 Pacific Northwest hurricane?
<dorje>	opposed?
<Plasticup>	It's not my favorite, but I am at peace with it
<Hurricanehink>	Can we agree it's better than Transcolorado?
<dorje>	yes
<Plasticup>	less cool, more accurate
<Roadgeek_Adam>	My idea, so I support
<Roadgeek_Adam>	I'll move it if you'd like
