August 11 offshore Japan

[edit]

Noticed a possible tropical storm offshore Japan that was spawned northeast of a TUTT cyclone to the north of Super Typhoon Betty. It does not appear that the JTWC warned on it. It passed very close to Japan. Added an Other Storms section to cover this cyclone. If some other warning center identified it, the article should be changed appropriately. Thegreatdr 21:11, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not so sure it should be included. Sorry, but it violates the original research policy. The same might go for the storms in the 1992 AHS. Hurricanehink (talk) 03:27, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the couple of those storms in 1992 actually have a reference, so they're not original research. This one, I guess, is, unless we can find a reference. Thegreatdr 20:18, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I hid the section concerning the other storms due to it being possibly being original research. If it does indeed violate the policy, someone can remove it. Unfortunately, that's the way it is :( Hurricanehink (talk) 01:47, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unnamed December typhoon

[edit]

Can someone smarter than I am explain this to me? UNISYS has it [1]. GIBBS shows that they're not lying [2]. But the 1987 reports end at the storm before it (Phyllis) and the next season begins with Roy. So, unless they came up with a 'Q' name, this Category 3 typhoon formed, developed, and hit the Philippines, without a doubt causing significant damage...all without a name. Even more puzzling is the fact that this storm is in the best track, here's the link. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 18:23, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That would be Typhoon Phyllis. It appears the JTWC skipped a storm. Unisys and JTWC has 21W as Maury, a super typhoon which hit the Philippines in October. Unisys has a weak tropical storm as 22W, and the JTWC in the season listing has 22W as a TS. However, the 22W report for Nina shows it as a supertyphoon which hit the Philippines in November. The rest of the season is messed up. Perhaps the JTWC discovered the tropical storm known by Unisys as 22W, but didn't write a report on it even though they meant to. Hurricanehink (talk) 18:39, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah ha! I found the culprit. UNISYS has the Central Pacific's Peke listed as Typhoon 16. This bumps all the numbers outta whack. There was no unnamed storm, except maybe the one The Great Dr. found. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 18:55, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Don't blame UNISYS, they blindly copy the JTWC best track. Peke is indeed the issue here; incidentally this means that Wikimedia's tracks are probably the single best source for this period! This is why I have my error reporting page, I can't catch all these errors, or may misassign the names.--Nilfanion (talk) 19:00, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do we include these storms? I mean, look at the 2000 season. The RSMC missed a big load of TCs - especially tropical storms. I didn't know whether to put an "Other Storms" section because its going to be huge. Good kitty 22:50, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know we did that for the 1992 Atlantic hurricane season, since there were 3-4 other candidates, with at least two to be likely additions to the database. The question is...would you prefer them being in the main article, or a later subsection? Thegreatdr 04:21, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
