Links in lead

@DMacks: You reverted a change I made after a discussion at the Teahouse. The MOS:BOLDLEAD guideline is unusually specific: "Links should not be placed in the boldface reiteration of the title in the first sentence of a lead". An accompanying note states "Linking part of the bolded text is also discouraged because it changes the visual effect of bolding; some readers may miss the visual cue which is the purpose of using bold face in the first place."

I take your point, though, that removing the link entirely has deprived readers of the opportunity to read more; time was at a premium when I boldly made the changes after the discussion at TH. Rather than edit the articles again to add more information, can we agree on a form of words for all these articles which comply with MOS:BOLDLEAD whilst retaining the extra information for readers, based on the example at MOS:BOLDLEAD? Perhaps

The 1st Writers Guild of America Awards honored the best film writers of 1948. Winners were announced in 1949.^[1] The awards are for film, television, and radio writing including both fiction and non-fiction categories, and are given by the Writers Guild of America.

Defintely an improvement. I think even better would be:

The 1st Writers Guild of America Awards honored the best film writers of 1948. Winners were announced in 1949.^[2] The Writers Guild of America Awards are for film, television, and radio writing including both fiction and non-fiction categories, and are given by the Writers Guild of America.

Unpiping the link to the parent article makes it clearer that that is the parent article and so the link is self-documented as these specific awards. DMacks (talk) 16:06, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
