Darryl Sydor
[edit]I thought the Pens named Sydor an alternate captain. I guess, Therrien changed his mind. GoodDay (talk) 00:14, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
- I hadn't realized he was injured. Even still, he was never named in any source, whereas Gonchar, Orpik, and Malkin were. Why do the Penguins insist on making these things so difficult? GrszX 00:16, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
The Penguins official website lists Gonchar & Sydor. GoodDay (talk) 00:42, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
I've added Sydor, on that basis. GoodDay (talk) 00:45, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
- I don't believe the Pens' website is updated. As per discussion here and the fact that only Malkin and Orpik have worn the A during games, I'm gonna change it to list only them. After all, players are not officially alternate captains until they've played in a game as one. Gonch can easily be re-added if/when he comesback to his position. If somebody wants to add a note that Gonchar has been an Alt for the past two years, go ahead, but he has never been officially aproved for this season. Blackngold29 03:56, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Next year
[edit]I compiled some information on next season relative to the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and placed it on a page for 2009–10 Pittsburgh Penguins season. I realize it's early because there won't be more info about that season for a while -- unless a rare circumstance arises such as anything in regard to the arena or any special events are announced -- but I wanted to find a place to include the draft information since it's good information that someone would want to look up before the draft rolls around. Also, it's all also well cited. I only wanted to follow the existing season format of including a draft on the page of its following season. The 09-10 season page has been nominated for deletion, which I understand the reasoning behind, but I want to find a place for the information regarding the Penguins upcoming draft picks. Any suggestions? JohnnyPolo24 (talk) 17:39, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- All the info you had was good and very well cited, it is just too soon. I think it would be good to use the citations on the 2009 NHL Entry Draft article, because none of the notes are currently cited. That would benefit that article. If you want to you can save the 2009-10 info on my second sandbox (just throw it at the bottom or something) and that way we wouldn't lose all of your work. Also if anything else that will effect next season occurs in the upcoming months feel free to add it there as it happens; citations are always easier to add when the event occurs than looking for them months later. Blackngold29 18:24, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- D'oh! I wasn't on the ball, and the page was deleted before I copied out the notes on the Penguins' upcoming draft picks. That took a while to collect all of that data w/ citations, but I may be up for doing it again in a few months. JohnnyPolo24 (talk) 17:27, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- Just contact any admin and they can copy the deleted content for you. GrszReview! 17:29, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks. That's good to know. Also, I didn't want to have to do that again. JohnnyPolo24 (talk) 18:29, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Third party sources
[edit]Per WP:SOURCES, as well as comments raised here, articles authored by the Pittsburgh Penguins should be used minimally. Associated Press or NHL articles hosted on pittsburghpenguins.com are acceptable. What we should strive to use is as many third-party sources as we can, ie the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette or Pittsburgh Tribune Review. Also note, Canada sports networks cover much more hockey than their American counterparts, and tsn.ca is a great source to us. Just something to consider for anyone who contributes. Grsz11 05:32, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
- Most of the game recaps from Penguins.com are written by the Associated Press and can be found on NHL.com and Yahoo! Sports as well. If I have some time I'll try to replace what I can. Obviously Penguins.com is going to have the most team coverage, but that's good advice for the future. blackngold29 05:43, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
Playoff series logs
[edit]I think it would be beneficial to use Template:NHLPlayoffs for the playoff logs rather than the custom collapsible tables that were also used in the regular season. The template is currently in use at the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs article. I understand if the argument is for consistancy, but for the Template is cleaner looking and contains more data. JohnnyPolo24 (talk) 12:37, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
- Grsz and I had discussed this (it's still the top thing on my talk page), I can't say that I'm really against it, but saw it as kind of a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of deal. The links are there to NHL.com which has anything people could want and like you mentioned the main playoff article uses it so the info isn't hard to come by. Basically, I won't stop you guys if you want it. Grsz thoughts? blackngold29 15:13, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Great page
[edit]I'm not a big hockey fan, but I like watching the Penguins play, especially since they were so close (*actually, we were just leverage for the new arena) to moving to my hometown of Kansas City. This is an awesome article and I think blackngold29 and all the other contributors have done a fantastic job in keeping me informed on this team now that they're headed back to the Finals. I know I've seen blackngold29's work in the past with the Steelers and their championship win earlier this year, hopefully another championship will be the payoff for this great article. Great job everyone. conman33 (. . .talk) 05:29, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate it. I have to give credit to Grsz because he took the step last year to improve that article during the regular season and get the ball rollling for good quality sports seasons and Killervogel5 because some of this article is based on his 2008 Phillies article. Hopefully we can get more people to contribute to different teams next season, and someday be able to have Featured topics based on one season. Keep up the great work on the Royals article, it's looking great! blackngold29 15:41, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Peer review
[edit]Hey everyone, I think we've got a great article here. It's extremely well cited, and I think we could get a very favorable rating. Do other members who helped by contributing to this article support the idea? I've never nominated an article before, so maybe we should go over it again, looking to add information that has come to light since the season ended – information such as Phillippe Boucher's recent retirement announcement[1]. Comments:
Good article, very detailed. Like the way that it is seperated into months, keeps everything simple to understand. However a few concerns before I'll pass it:
Prose:
- "On December 26, Marc-Andre Fleury made 37 saves in Pittsburgh's first shutout of the season, winning 1–0." Add what team they shutout.
- "On February 21, Crosby acquired his 250th career assist..." Acquired isn't the right word to use there; I'd suggest something like recorded.
- There is inconsistency of spelling Miroslav Šatan; some places have the diacritic in his name, some don't. I personally don't care what is used, as long as its consistant.
- For the stats table, it might be a good idea to differentiate what players were traded away, and who where acquired, rather than grouping all as one.
- Consider making a table for the players who made their NHL debuts; it looks odd seeing a list in the middle of the other tables.
- Penguins team awards is unsourced.
- There is a lack of images for the article, with the only non-playoff one being the back of Letang's head. There are plenty of images of Penguins players, and it would benefit the article. Considering there are images of both Therrien and Bylsma, I'd even suggest using one or both of them as well.
Reference issues:
- Refs 8, 85, 86, 113, 115, 120, 139, 140, 141, 177, 179, 180, 191 doesn't exist.
- Refs 6, 9, 12, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 29, 34, 35, 38, 41, 42, 43, 45, 48, 74, 77, 79, 81, 154, 165, 168, 175, 178, 182, 183, 186, 187, 188, 189, 199, 200 all redirect to the Penguins home page. This has to do with the NHL revamping the team pages a while back, so most of these articles should still exist on the Penguins site under a different url.
Once these are taken care of, I'll pass it. Kaiser matias (talk) 18:07, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
- Everything looks good. Passed. Kaiser matias (talk) 02:23, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Log of changes
[edit]- Corrected Fleury shutout.
- Added images.
- Replaced refs 8, 85, 85, 113, 115.
- Ref 120 doesn't need a url for a TV episode.
- Replaced refs 139, 140, 141 (all USA Today)
- Replaced refs 177, 179; 180 [2] seems to work, 191
- Replaced refs 6, 12, 41, 42, 43, 45, 48
- Replaced refs 74, 77, 81, 154, 165, 168, 175, 178, 182, 183, 186, 187, 188, 189, 199, 200
- Removed ref 9 (and its text), removed ref 22 (wasn't needed), 29 (sourced by table), 34 (unimportant detail), 38 (not needed), 79 (not needed)
- Replaced refs 20, 35
At this point, the reference numbers have changed
- Edited Crosby 250th assist
- Took diacritics from Satan
- In stats table, distinguished between traded away or acquired.
- Made a table for the players who made their NHL debuts.
- Provided a reference for the team awards.
