Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on January 13, 2009.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that, despite being suspended for half the game, college football running back Da'Rel Scott set a school bowl record for rushing for the Maryland Terrapins in their 2008 Humanitarian Bowl victory?

The Blue Turf[edit]

BSUOrangecrush has repeatedly removed this paragraph from the article:

Pundits and opponents have asserted that Boise State benefits from an added advantage by wearing their blue home uniforms to match the playing field.[23][24][25] Boise State possesses a 64–2 record at Bronco Stadium.[26] Nevada, designated as the home team, likewise wore their blue uniforms during the Humanitarian Bowl.

The statement cites several sources that explicitly state a belief that Boise State has an advantage from the color of their uniforms matching the turf. Sources including USA Today, CBS Sports, and opponent school papers. Another source, the Reno Gazette-Journal makes the connection of Nevada wearing blue and the turf. Here are some statements from reliable cited and other sources:

  • BYU coach Gary Crowton in USA Today: "If it were green turf, it wouldn't offer any challenges, but the blue turf really gets you ... It is a unique place to play. ... The turf is blue and they wear all blue. You can't see everybody at times..." [1]
  • CBS Sports article: "Some opponents believe its an unfair advantage, saying the blue turf and the Broncos' blue uniforms are camouflage." [2]
  • The Sporting News: "Attendance is expected to be about 25,000 and Nevada's blue uniforms may blend into the turf." [3]
  • Baltimore Examiner (article about this game): "Boise State, which calls Bronco Stadium home, uses its blue home uniforms to blend into the playing field, creating a unique visual that provides an unparalleled home-field advantage. It works - in the last 10 seasons the Broncos are 64-2 at home." [4]
  • Reno Gazette-Journal: "CAMOUFLAGE ADVANTAGE FOR PACK? Nevada is designated the home team and is expected to wear its solid blue uniforms, assistant media relations director Chad Hartley said. There were some grumblings by visiting teams this season that when Boise State wore solid blue the Broncos were difficult to see on the blue turf. The turf is possibly closer to the navy blue of Nevada than the lighter blue the Broncos wear." [5]

This IS relevant to this article, and the fact that Nevada would also be wearing blue as the home team was mentioned in several articles in the lead up to the game, specifically because of the turf color.

BSUOrangecrush: The truth of the statement is not in question here. The issue is whether the assertion is relevant to the subject. I think it is clearly relevant to the article, due to the fact that sources have specifically made a connection between Nevada wearing blue and BSU's purported advantage due to the blue-on-blue.

Just because you don't like or agree with a statement doesn't mean it doesn't warrant inclusion.

bsuorangecrush: So just because some sports writers get bored over the 3 weeks between games and form some opinon about the turf and uniforms to fill their columns makes it fact? NO! It is still just opinion. You cannot prove that boise state gets an advantage just because they ware blue on the blue, and to say that nevada would recieve an adavantage by wareing blue was obviously wrong by the final score. this site should contain facts, not opionins. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bsuorangecrush (talkcontribs) 06:25, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
May I suggest that you read over Wikipedia:TRUE and Wikipedia:Verifiability. The way that the statement is written in the article is not as a presentation of fact, but of a widely held opinion (as demonstrated by the above cited sources). Whether it is true or fact is not relevant; it is a widespread belief amongst writers on the subject matter and coaches and players who have faced opponents under the circumstances in question.
And I should also point out that just because a team loses doesn't mean that it doesn't hold some degree of an advantage over another team. If that were true, no team would ever lose at home, due to the widely-held belief of an inherent home-field advantage.
