Sprint for the Cup?[edit]

Could someone please provide a reference to where they renamed the chase to "Sprint for the Cup"...I googled that exact term and got absolutely nothing so I seriously doubt its been renamed.KaseyKahneFan 10:39, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • At the Charlotte Press Tour media opportunity on January 21st, Brian France, NASCAR's chairman announced the name change during his speech to the media. The name replaces the "Chase for the Cup", and it was chosen as a homage to the Sprint brand name and "Sprint speed" ad campaign. NoseNuggets (talk) 12:13 PM US EDT Feb 6 2008.
Well that would be a pretty significant change, why haven't they actually officially announced it yet? If they had then it would pass the Google test which it currently does not. I think their should be a source somewhere other than Wikipedia itself about the name change if not we should not consider this "official".KaseyKahneFan 19:05, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bowyer, Smith, and others[edit]

Do not post them under their current teams. They do not have contracts through next year, and there have been no official team releases. Provide evidence, because wikipedia is not a crystal ball. Casey14 00:52, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Bowyer has a long-term contract with RCR. NoseNuggets (talk) 12:14 PM US EST Feb 6 2008.

Can someone protect this page?[edit]

The vandalism (mostly by non-users) especially in the confirmed teams is getting out of hand. I think a semi-protect should be put on this pageFrank Anchor 22:42, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

i don't see any vandelism in that area (Racerboy (talk) 22:32, 11 February 2008 (UTC))[reply]

I guess citations don't matter[edit]

I started to add citations, and now they're gone. I'm done with this page, and I hope it gets deleted for not referencing its sources. Casey14 15:21, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have begun work on restoring citations, because deleting what is clearly an important article is just plain silly. I have removed all the rumored material. -- Scjessey 16:22, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable sources[edit]

I do not consider Jayski to be a "reliable source" based on the fact that much of the information presented is rumor and speculation. I think it should not be used for citing references. Jayski sometimes cites sources too, and I feel that anything added to the article should be cited by one of these proper references. What do others think? -- Scjessey 21:27, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. It's like Pro Football Talk for the NFL. Both have great inside sources, but neither can be verified through other published sources. Pats1 T/C 11:14, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Schedule[edit]

Editors continue to add dates to the Cup schedule, yet nothing has been confirmed to date. NASCAR has been particularly tardy with the release of the schedule this year. Please refrain from adding speculation to the article. -- Scjessey 21:15, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NASCAR has now released the schedule, but sponsors and race titles have yet to be confirmed. Would all editors refrain from adding unconfirmed material to the article. -- Scjessey 17:36, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Race Sponsorship Confirmation[edit]

Some tracks, such as Las Vegas, Richmond and several others, have confirmed their sponsorships for the 2008 races. Hence the explaination of "sponsorships confirmed by either by the track and/or NASCAR" that was placed before the revert. I am putting up the sponsorships by confirmation. NoseNuggets 1:40 PM US EDT Sept 26 2007.

Suggestion of change to "The names of some of the races have been offically been confirmed by several tracks because of contractual deals with the sponsor and the tracks listed, although they have not been approved by NASCAR." Also, races at Pocono are sponsorless by order of track management, hence the listing of "Pocono 500" and "Pennsylvania 500" on those pages, while names such as "Coca-Cola 600" and "Allstate 400 at The Brickyard" have been considered "traditional" among NASCAR fans. NoseNuggets 1:51 PM US EDT Sept 26 2007

I don't think that will be anything like sufficient. If a track has provided official confirmation, the article must reference that confirmation. Furthermore, not all Wikipedia users are "traditional" NASCAR fans. We must assume the reader knows nothing. You must be a Wikipedian first, and a NASCAR fan second. Once again, if NASCAR.com (the only absolutely reliable source for ALL schedule information) does not include the information, we should only add it when we can provide a reliable source. That means we must provide a reference for all instances not covered by the official NASCAR schedule. -- Scjessey 17:59, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Then how come there are within Wikipedia there are notes such as in the Goody's Cool Orange 500 article about the length of the contract of sponsorship? Even though NASCAR assumes that we would be left as "TBA", and Pocono has no sponsorship for their races, should we just put names that are confirmed by either/or? This is just hypocrosy in NASCAR and makes them "anal retentive" IMHO. NoseNuggets 2:11 PM US EDT Sept 26 2007.
This article cannot refer to other articles for confirmation. Wikipedia itself is not a reliable source (it cannot refer to itself), and each article needs to have independent references. I'm not sure about the two Pocono races, but I assumed that they have no sponsorship because they couldn't find anyone to sponsor them (like some of the races at Watkins Glen). There are many sponsorships up for renewal in NASCAR this season (Budweiser's deal for the Budweiser Shootout runs out in July, for example), so we should not assume anything is going to be the same as last year. -- Scjessey 19:17, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Jayski.com has confirmed that next year's July race at Daytona will be called the Coke 400, and TNT will return with their "wide-open" coverage. I have changed the schedule (and the Wiki page) swiftly. NoseNuggets (talk)12:03 PM US EST Nov 26 2007. —Preceding comment was added at 17:02, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

#70 Johhny Sauter/Scott Riggs[edit]

It has not been confirmed yet which car Scott Riggs will be in next year, and Haas CNC said that Johhny Sauter is still under contract.[1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by Braandpantiesmatch (talkcontribs) 16:56, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was restore page title to 2008 in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from "2008 in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series", per the discussion below. Any semantic problem remains unclear to most of the editors who have expressed their opinions here. Dekimasuよ! 15:34, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea why someone moved this page to use the word "in," because I thought the idea was to no longer title sports seasons articles in that manner. Spicy 14:25, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • AGREE - The history shows the article was never called 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, although the proposed title makes sense. The most recent move was from 2008 in NASCAR Sprint Cup (which I reverted, because the official title has the word "series" in it). -- Scjessey 14:39, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The history actually shows that it was moved from 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series to 2008 in NASCAR Sprint Cup on October 6. I was quite befuddled when I saw the redirect this morning. The reason I bring it up is because the move to 2008 in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series goes against established precedent. (i.e., previous seasons pages were moved to titles without the word "in.") Spicy 14:49, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You are quite right. I have no idea why it was done either (the reason given by D-Day was "making name more reasonable", which I disagreed with). -- Scjessey 16:53, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I moved it to because I the name did not make sense without the "in". If you wish to put season on the end of it, that would make sense, but otherwise it reads poorly. --D-Day 19:45, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't make any sense. Does "2008 Summer Olympics" read poorly? How about the "2007 World Series"? Clearly, 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series follows convention. You cannot add "season" to the end because in this context, it has a similar meaning to "series" itself. -- Scjessey 20:05, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The World Series and Olymipics are seperate events. 2007 Daytona 500 makes sense and doesn't sound awkward, while "2007 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series" does. Also, football and baseball season articles use the "in" phrase still, sto I don't see why we should change the name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by D-Day (talkcontribs) 21:18, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Generic sports articles use the word "in," such as 2007 in baseball, but leagues' seasons don't, such as 2007 Major League Baseball season. 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series had already been moved from an article title with "in," so it doesn't really make any sense to move the 2008 article to the older format. Spicy 13:05, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The "in" reads poorly to me, and the rename goes against most of the other NASCAR seasons. A few seasons need to be renamed from an older naming convention. Royalbroil 00:05, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Then we'll need to put "season" at the end. Otherwise, it'll still look awkward. --D-Day 18:37, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is no need for "season", because it already says "series" (which in this context means essentially the same thing). Looks like you're outnumbered on this one, D-Day. -- Scjessey 20:13, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

Spaces around slashes[edit]

I have restored the spaces around the slashes that were removed by earlier edits, dramatically improving the legibility of the teams table in the article. Please do not remove them again. -- Scjessey (talk) 17:23, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Linking directly to sponsors' websites is not appropriate. If no Wikipedia article exists, then it is better to leave them as red links or delink them completely. -- Scjessey (talk) 02:05, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flag Icons added[edit]

I added the U. S. state and national flag icons (of a couple non-American drivers) to the lists on both the 2008 Daytona 500 and 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pages. The circut is no longer condsidered a USA-only fan base and especially in the Southeast, so many of the drivers come from all over the country, and even outside the USA to comepte. NoseNuggets (talk) 12 noon US EST Feb 7 2008 (Modified 10:29 AM US EDT May 23 2008)

New for '08: Car Make Icons[edit]

I'd though I'd add something new for the 2008 result charts.

Instead of listing the car make, I thought I'd put an small image of the car maker instead. Here's the codes and how they'll look in the results (with of course the Wiki links in single parenthesis rather than the usual double brackets):

  • 25px (Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg|25px)
  • 20px (Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg|20px)
  • 40px (Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg|40px)
  • 40px (Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg|40px)

Comments and opinions are always welcome. NoseNuggets (talk) 8:09 AM US EST Feb 10 2008

The only problem I see is with their repeated use and copyright issus. Until we get an image expert to weigh in, we should refrain from their use. It would be cool and slick and look really good, but we need to insure that it is acceptable WikiUse first. VigilancePrime (talk) 13:21, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A quick modifaction is to have the logo and the make along side one another. Good idea? Besides, they were taken from the manufacturer's wikipages in their infoboxes, so I see nothing wrong with it. NoseNuggets (talk) 9:28 AM US EST Feb 10 2008
It looks nice but I doubt it will be allowed once a higher up sees it. It would be like what happened to the screenshot images in TV episode lists' on Wikipedia. Personally I think we should just stick with text to I.D. the make.--KaseyKahneFan 22:48, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Citations, tables and flag cruft[edit]

I am astounded to discover that most of the references have been stripped from the article (citations for drivers, for example), and suddenly we have all this flagcruft. Also, the driver and team tables need to be brought into line with those in the previous season, which means sortable wikitables. This article needs a major cleanup. -- Scjessey (talk) 16:13, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I removed them (driver references) because most of the driver/sponsor changes are official now that the season is underway. For instance I don't think Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s move is going to be "challenged or likely to be challenged". If it's a major problem I will add them back in. As for the flags I could care less for them, wasn't my idea, they could be removed per WP:FLAG. The team chart table has been changed to sortable.--KaseyKahneFan 18:07, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As for the "flagcruft", if you look at the hoods of the drivers, many of them have state (or national flags) next to their names and this just shows what states (or nation) they are from (or born in). For example, Jeff Gordon was born in Indiana, but was forced to move to California at an early age because some tracks would not allow him to race in The Hoosier State. NoseNuggets (talk) 3:44 PM US EDT Jun 26 2008

Qualifying/Canceled Qualifying[edit]

A quick note about failing to make the race. When there is qualifying, the standard use will be "Failed to qualify" in bold text. Should qualifying be canceled due to rain or other inclement weather, the standard use would be "Failed to make race as qualifying was canceled due to rain/snow/etc.", also in bold text. NoseNuggets (talk) 9:08 AM US EST Feb 23 2008.

John Andretti and Front Row running full time[edit]

The team should be on the list, as in all the press releases the team has released, they have said they are running full time.Casey14 (talk) 18:54, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Possible New Sponsorship in 2009[edit]

There are rumors of T-Mobile buying out Sprint and making it the NASCAR T-Mobile Cup Series in 2009. —Preceding unsigned comment added by NASCARFreak101 (talkcontribs) 02:08, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it's T-Mobile, and I fixed that name for you. NoseNuggets (talk) 11:08 AM US EDT Mar 17 2008.
hopefully T-Mobil doesn't do that. It would be mass confusion, and dumb, i like the Sprint Cup --Jrobb525 (talk) 15:49, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Weekly Standings[edit]

As of today (3/17), I have posted the weekly Top 35 Owner standings (not Driver standings) in the teams section. The hope is every Monday morning, they will be updated. NoseNuggets (talk) 11:10 US EDT Mar 17 2008.

  • Do we really need a chart for the Driver standings at the bottom of the page? I am requesting that only the Top 12 weekly driver standings be posted below the chart of owner points. That chart can be useful in the chase page instead. NoseNuggets (talk) 10:22 US EDT May 23 2008

Slacking off on the pages[edit]

I've noticed that pages for this year's races - most notable among them the 2008 Dodge Challenger 500 and the 2008 Crown Royal Presents the Dan Lowry 400 - are unfinished with information needed (Top ten finishers, race recaps, etc.) Let's all get together and fill those blanks in. NoseNuggets (talk) 10:24 AM US EDT May 23 2008

Who "mainly" does the Championship Standings[edit]

I decided to do it this week. It takes alot of time and effort to get done every week. I would like to congrat. the person who mainly does it. However, from now on i will be helping do it. I enjoy taking a break and getting my brain all messed up with bunch of codes and what not.

--Jrobb525 (talk) 15:46, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Jrobb525, that's usually my responsability to update the owners standings. If you want to do a Top 12 Drivers standings starting in July as we get closer to the Sprint for the Championship, feel free to do so. NoseNuggets (talk) 4:10 PM US EDT Jun 11 2008.

It's the 2008 Kansas 400, Stupid![edit]

I had to change the main jist of the September Kansas race from the 2008 LifeLock 400 to the 2008 Kansas 400 (until an official sponsor arrives) and noted that LifeLock already sponsors (or sponsored) two races - the June race at Michigan and the July race in Chicago - to save confusion amongst ourselves. Will someone change the official title, please? Thanks. NoseNuggets (talk) 3:39 PM US EDT June 26 2008.

A Cease and Desist Request[edit]

Whomever has been posting the weekly Top 35 automatic qualifiers on the individual race pages, please stop. The main page on the 2008 Sprint Cup Series section is updated weekly, and is used to track the standings there. If this does not stop, I will have no other choice but to ask for semi-protection on all race pages for the remainder of the season, allowing only registered users to post on said pages. Thank you. NoseNuggets (talk) 5:00 PM US EDT Jul 31 2008.

Sprint Cup Series Season[edit]
