To be honest, I don't see the need for this extra page, when it's virtually a copy of a section from 2014 AFL season. There's also nothing of notability that could be extracted from these matches either. MasterMind5991 (talk) 06:49, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Additionally, it's inappropriate to have a ladder when none formally exists. I'll change the page into a redirect. Aspirex (talk) 05:14, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have no opinion about the ladder, but I think the article should remain to retain continuity with other pre-season competition articles. StAnselm (talk) 05:29, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The point is that there is no actual continuity to retain. This series is no longer a "competition" by virtue of there no longer being a winner. The 25-year history of VFL/AFL pre-season competitions is officially over (or at least on hiatus). The only thing that gives this series any gasp of notability is that it has a sponsored name; but if you look past that superficial aspect, it is just a sequence of stand-alone practice matches which is no more notable than giving a list of the practice matches that VFL clubs played against SANFL and WAFL teams in any given year in the 70s or 80s.
Structure-wise, Mastermind's original point is valid: this page contains identical information to 2014 AFL season. Whatever the outcome of this discussion, we either redirect this page to 2014 AFL season, or blank the relevant section in 2014 AFL season and provide a link.
As you have no opinion on the matter, I'm re-removing the ladder. It is fundamentally incorrect to include it. Aspirex (talk) 05:45, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, it is consistently called a "competition" in reliable sources: [1][2][3] StAnselm (talk) 06:07, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That's a very soft argument which avoids the point. In my context, I'm using "competition" specifically to refer to a sporting event with a winner; and it is the fact that the 2014 NAB Challenge does not meet this definition – not the fact that you can find a source which uses the word more broadly than I – which is at the root of the question of notability. The NAB Challenge is nothing more than a set of televised practice matches; with neither prestige nor prize money at stake, it cannot be considered notable as a sports event (which is my liberally extrapolated interpretation of WP:SPORTSEVENT). With reference to Wikipedia:Summary_style#Avoiding_unnecessary_splits, we should not be creating spin-off articles where the spin-off fails to meet notability guidelines; and unless you can defend its notability, I maintain that it should be converted to a redirect. • Merge back into the 2014 season article. There's no need for this minimal stub to be a separate article. Reyk YO! 06:30, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep the article, delete the ladder. Deviation from the norm is notable, keeping the category tree active is useful and I'm sure that there are sources commenting about the change and the (lack of ) relevance etc that could flesh out this article. And I would argue that the list of challenge and practice match results shouldn't be in the main season article, but only here. We normally only put the grand final result in the main season article with a main link to this sort of sub article, so thinking about what is truly relevant to the season article, that list should only be in this article. • I've removed the results from 2014 AFL season again as they aren't important enough to fill the first page or so of the article. Especially as there was no grand final, individual pre-season game results don't belong in the main season article. The-Pope (talk) 05:42, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
