I created this article from this text written by User:JJUGA08. Seems the consensus at Timothy M. Wolfe is that it doesn't belong there. However, it is pretty amazing that this event does not yet have its own wikipedia page. Ousting of a university administration by a student uprising seems to be notable. I think there are issues with the text as is, so I cleaned it up with the time I had and then decided to put it out into the community, especially due to the current nature of the event. @XinJeisan: @WikiOriginal-9: @KConWiki:Agree, I was astonished that the "History" sections of University of Missouri and the System pages had one sentence only, and it was not being updated. And that there was no standalone article. Unfortunately great minds think alike and we created the article, twice. See the discussion below for more on how we need to merge these. -- Fuzheado | Talk 19:47, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Perfectly fine with me to merge; I went looking for an article when I was watching about this on the news this morning, and "uprising" was the one that I found. KConWiki (talk) 02:45, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There is zero evidence that the poop swastika actually existed.

Terminology in title

[edit]

The common definition of 'uprising' denotes the action being directed toward a government or its policies, and is otherwise a rebellion. Aren't there more accurate terms for this? Possibly a term used by any of the primary parties in any kind of prominent or consistent way?

I agree, I belive we can follow past articles by using the title "Univerisy of Missouri Protest". This way the language of the title is more NPOV and the article can show the background and information on what lead to the protests. Also, this is what many news outlets are calling it. I will also look at the formatting of the article and cleaning it up a bit. I will be using the Ferguson page as a template of sorts. Please provide any feedback you can Catrichardson31 (talk) 17:09, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I also agree that the use of the word "uprising" in the current title is misleading and incorrect. I would suggest something like "2015 University of Missouri student protests". -- Dan Griscom (talk) 20:51, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Dtgriscom: @Catrichardson31: - The problem is that article exists already, so any help you can provide in merging would be appreciated. See the end of the talk page for 2015 University of Missouri protests -- Fuzheado | Talk 22:57, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
When I created the article, i saw this PBS article used the term uprising. Also, since the movement actually did force the resignation of at least two public officials, it is a kind of rebellion. I am not wedded to the title, but to me protest actually seemed a bit too weak to describe what was happening, especially considering it was a hunger strike and student strike, rather than a mass protest, that was the catalyst of it. (in fact, when I started thinking about the article, I was thinking of using the term strike). Anyways, I did think it through I do believe it is NPOV and does come from a legit mainstream media source. XinJeisan (talk) 02:00, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

student 1950

[edit]

what's the point of pointing out that student1950 comes from a rich family. it's a pretty obvious and out of place attempt at impugning him — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.108.50.70 (talk) 19:20, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know, for reference I think the question is referring to this passage. --Jeremyb (talk) 19:32, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Uh oh, we need a merge with 2015 University of Missouri protests -- Fuzheado | Talk 19:28, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ugh. thanks for the note! --Jeremyb (talk) 19:30, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I would think it would be best to merge the information from the UPRISING article into the PROTESTS one, due to formatting issues. I think the details and work done for this article is worth saving, but since the formatting in the PROTESTS one is much better, it only makes sense to merge that way. Then the question is, though, should we use UPRISING, PROTESTS, or another title. With things still happening there, with rumors of the KKK and professors submitting resignations, this is still an ongoing event which needs to be reflected in the article. In any case, glad to see the community becoming involved. XinJeisan (talk) 01:54, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We don't have to worry about the eventual title in order to do the merge. Page moves are cheap. --Jeremyb (talk) 01:57, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
+1 on that. XinJeisan (talk) 02:04, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with this general approach. I think that "Protests" is more neutral and less emotion-grabbing than "uprising"; I also think that "Protests" has some nice compartments into which some or all of the contents of "Uprising" can be inserted. KConWiki (talk) 02:49, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I guess consensus has been reached, but if you are going to change links from this article to protest (see 1 and 2) the community needs to make sure the contents of this article are merged into PROTEST as quickly and comprehensively as possible. XinJeisan (talk) 04:22, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Just came from the protests side to check out what's up. I like the detailed way this page is set up but sadly it's also a big ol' wall of text. Gonna need to break it up into chunks to digest it easier, but I suppose that's how merges usually go, eh? Sethyre (talk) 05:58, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I was at least partially responsible for removing a lot of this content from the Timothy Wolfe page, and it wasn't simply because this degree of detail wasn't appropriate on a bio page, it's also because a lot of this is problematic for other reasons, like NPOV concerns. A lot of this is advocacy, and isn't actually supported by the citations. For instance, "Students argued that Wolfe was unable to come to grips with the mounting racial tensions on Mizzou’s campus and that he, as a white male raised in Columbia, MO, is not the face of "progress" sought by the student protesters" is cited to an article from Heavy.com. The problem is that nowhere in the citation does it cite to anyone raising where he was born as a concern. I agree that merging makes sense, but it will require a careful review of what's in this article to comply with the MOS. JCO312 (talk) 14:54, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone through and removed a lot of the material that violated NPOV, fixed the references, and merged the content that wasn't duplicative into the 2015 University of Missouri protests page. If anyone has anything else they think needs to be done, please do so, and then we can complete the merge by redirecting this page. JCO312 (talk) 17:34, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
